  • Best one to two night backpacking trip

    Hi,

I am going to be in the high peaks area (Keene Valley) for pretty much all of August. I was wondering if anybody knew some good one to two night backpacking trips in the high peaks area for a novice and experienced backpacker. We are looking for trips that wont be that crowded but still offer some memorable views. Thanks in advance!!!

Good chance snowbird campsite, between haystack and Basin, not many venture that far with full gear, id say camping om way to Mt. Colvin maybe a good spot, then you have Fishawk cliffs and indian head.

I would suggest the Wolf Jaws campsite with clost access to Lower Wolf Jaw, Upper Wolf Jaw, Armstong, Gothics, Big Slide, and Yard. If you're ambitious you could do Sawteeth, Pyramid, Basin/Saddleback, Haystack, or Marcy. So there are a lot of options.

It is a nice hike in (about 4-4.5 miles) and tends to be less popular since most people stay at JBL (1 mile before). If you go during the week, you will likely be able to get the lean-to.

The trail head would start at the Garden (Keene Valley), so not much driving.

My most beautiful hike was in dry, clear weather last September. A spate of dry weather is what made this trip enjoyable.

Day 1. ADK Loj to Avalanche Lake to Lake Colden. We didn't camp here, but it is prime real estate with several lean-tos overlooking the lake. We kept going an additional mile or so to the UpHill Lean-to. Lean-to was occupied and we camped along the trail to Redfield, next to a stream. A little hard to find a dry spot as whole area was a little muddy.

Day 2 we climbed Skylight and Gray, but could have easily done Marcy as well, and returned to camp.

Day 3. Break camp and hiked out the Feldspar trail towards Lake Arnold (east side of Mt. Colden) and back to the ADK Loj.

Was something like 7.5 miles, 5.2 miles and 6.5 mile segments by gps.

What was nice about this hike was that the woods opened up nicely around Avalanche Lake and Lake Colden and along the Opalescent River headwaters heading home on the Feldspar Trail. If you wanted to stay in the woods an extra day, you could easily do Redfield and Cliff, or maybe move camp to Lake Arnold and do Mt. Colden on the way out.
