I've never been the type of guy who is deterred from going camping because of some bad weather in the forecast, but I do want to keep a close eye on this storm.
From what I've been hearing, Irene has a very good chance of affecting the entire Northeastern US, including the Adirondacks on late Saturday night into Sunday.
I'm certainly not scared of rain, but I certainly do not want to be around for another Adirondack micro-burst or worse.

Seems like the Adirondacks might be due for another devastating storm, and I sure do not want to be camped out in the middle of it when she hits.

I'm wondering what others think of this impending storm, especially if you also have plans to camp this weekend.

Todays model forecast has the storm going right over my house. We will be kayaking. But two hours away so that if the thing comes early we can come home early.

          We have a weather radio.

Yep NOAA weather radio + hike or camp where you can get out fairly quickly in case of a bad forecast.

As of this AM, forecasters are still not sure if the storm will turn out to sea or come inland. I live in Cape May NJ and we are waiting to hear if we will need to evacuate. The storm may to come our way later in the day on Saturday so you may be OK to camp in the ADK's through SUnday.

Local municipalities here have cancelled all events for the weekend and they are asking people not to come down to the shore this weekend. Debating on what I will do if they want to evacuate. Could be interesting; an earthquake and a hurricaine in the same week.

That Sucks. I'va always been in awe of the power of storms. But I've al;ways felt bad for those who were in their path.

Keep my fingers crossed for you, as well as anyone on the trails.

JudgeH and Steve whom I hiked a section with Monday are somewhere along Long Lake on the NPT as we speak. It's iffy as to whether they are going to get out on Saturday or Sunday. And I don't believe they suspect that this storm may come with the possible intensity that has been projected.

even if Irene doesn't hit the adks, the prevailing westerly winds will be interrupted and the winds will come from the east. Set up tents, tarps and choose campsites appropriately. (I know I Justin doesn't need this advice, it is for other readers).

Just some food for thought. Below is the 5 day forecast for Irene along with the track of Hurricane Floyd in 1999.

                    Same track, same strength. Hmmmmmm.

Saturday looks OK in the Adirondacks. I'm hopeful for getting one good day in this weekend.

There is a mandatory evacuation in my county. I have so much to do to get ready to leave. Will probably stay through saturday Hopefully most people start out tomorrow. Riding out the storm seems interesting though. Really concerned about my house. I have alot of big trees on my property

                          Thanks for the replies everyone.
We've decided to play it safe and postpone our camping trip.
Think I might just do a day trip somewhere on Saturday instead.

                          Daxs, good luck to you.
...and to everyone, please be safe.

                            Hurricane Irene Advisory
Due to anticipated hazardous weather from Hurricane Irene, we urge the public to not attempt to use hiking trails or backcountry camping areas as follows:

Lower Hudson Valley and Catskill Park - Saturday, 8/27 through Monday 8/29
Capital Region, Southern Adirondacks, Western Adirondacks and Northern Adirondacks - Sunday 8/28 through Monday 8/29

Hurricane Irene is expected to generate extremely high winds and heavy rainfalls which could result in flooding, heavy erosion of trails, falling trees and limbs and, possibly, landslides on steep slopes. Please check the Adirondack trail conditions webpage or contact your nearest DEC regional office before using trails.

We had planed to go to Lake Harris near Newcomb on Sunday.
Think we'll either go Monday or else go to Allegheny National Forrest.

Looks like they're not expecting as much rain in western PA.
