  • Gore Mt to Garnet Hill question

A few years ago I got fit enough to do the backcountry ski trip from Gore to Garnet Hills but didn't get it together to do it. Then I heard Garnet Hill was closed/for sale but it looks like they are reopened. Has anyone done this trip and have some info on how long it takes(average), how difficult the terrain is, and if the trail is usually broken out. I don't know if I'm up to it yet, but I'd like some info so I could dream about it.

I haven't skied it but I have hiked it. I'd recommend starting at Garnet Hill and ending at Gore as the new trail from Barton Mine Rd down to 28N is mainly downhill -- steep in some sections and along a ridge so be careful. There are plenty of trails around Garnet Hill that can occupy your time there

      Gore to Garnet info

I did this maybe 4 years ago as part of a tour sponsored by Garnet Hill ski center. We got shuttled to Gore, took the gondola up then left the ski area headed N from just above the base of the High Peaks lift. I think it was 9 miles and we took perhaps 3+ hours. There was plenty of slushy snow, so not as fast as I would have liked. We also had a few less experienced skiers moving slowly at times. They did disuade one person from joining. Anyone with intermediate skills could do it with good snow. I was well equipped with Excursion boots and 90mm metal edge skis. A step up from pure light touring equipment would be helpful (a few tight turns)

There were two guides from Garnet Hill and I think 5 of us paying guests. That trip does cross private property (Barton Mines) so you'd need permission somehow. There may be another route that doesn't cross Barton Lands. A few new trails have been cut in the past few years.

There are numerous trails in the area with great (non groomed but frequently used) skiing including the Botheration loop, and a route from the Garnet Hill (Old Farm Clearing public trailhead) to the intersection of the Barton Mine Rd (Halfway Brook) then over to the N of Gore. One can also descend down to Rt 28 via Raymond Brook or to the ski bowl too. Raymond Brook especially would not be for beginners and some HD equipment advised. There is a good map showing all these trails made by former Ranger Steve Ovitt available at a few North Creek shops. I know mine (2 yrs old?) doesn't show all the newest trails.

Thanks for the info guys. I thought it was a lot longer than that. I have been reading alot of posts about the Botheration and Old Farm loops and have been looking into maybe getting up that way. It's great to finally have some snow.

The map Bob K is talking about can also be found here (there is a link right near the top of the home page:

Great skiing. I've been all over there the last week.
