    Found this article this morning:



    Looks like it would require a river crossing to make it a through route from Newcomb to Indian Lake - as there is a 'proposed' bridge on the map:



    Anyone know what that water crossing would be like? I'm guessing its here on the GoogleMaps:

    Find local businesses, view maps and get driving directions in Google Maps.

    That proposed bridge site is at the big bend, the water there is deep and slow.
    Crossing would require a swim of about 30 yards...here's a look

      Thanks.... That would be a problem!

      Anywhere close by that would be a wade in the early fall with (hopefully) low water?

        Just upstream is a set of small rapids, in very low water you might be able to hop across there. Downstream is a ways before the next rapids and shallows, the south side road peters out before that.
        Have you studied the satellite images on Bing? They're the next best thing to being there (or asking someone that has)!!

          Bing / GoogleMaps / Apple Maps / Topo stuff... try to look at it all.
          I've been fascinated with connecting through here since my very first overnight bike trip across the ADKs via MRP... not sure if I'll make it go this year, but I'd love to try.

          I don't mind getting the feet / legs wet - but I don't want to be up to my waist with a bike and gear in the water.

            Can't you float the bike via the tires? And bring a big dry bag to toss your gear in for the crossing and just swim across with that.

            Doesn't seem so bad to me...

              maybe if i was rolling on the pugsley with the big tires.
              i'll likely be on the krampus with only the chubby 3" tires.

              but i don't really want to flood the BB and the Rohloff with water...

              i'll have to round up the usual suspects and fit in a scouting mission via car to newcomb and then ride in.

              on Bing Maps it looks promising - travel further east along the road - there is a small island and some rapids, past what looks to be a logging staging lot - then cross, and there is a dead end loop for the road on the south side of the river... that connects back to where the proposed bridge is supposed to go.

                I was near there in mid June '13...Here's what the Cedar River looked like about a mile west of the confluence with the Hudson...

                    I say at least waist to chest deep....If memory serves me correct the water level was pretty high and flowing swiftly enough for me to know there was no way I was going to try and cross it to get to the road on the north side that day...

                      USGS doesn't have any gauges along the Cedar, so I'm out of luck looking at flow rates... but the Hudson not far from there is way higher than average for this time of year.

                      I'm guessing theres a significant difference between June and September.

                          some day i'll own a packraft... i have ideas for bike / float trips in the ADKs... but yes, i've thought of taking a kids raft along.
