  • Couple day trip Ideas?

    Hey all.

I have the itch (yet again) to just get out for a couple days with m canoe. I'm retired now so a mid week trip is what I'm thinking in the hopes of finding minimal crowds.

I recognize it's summer and the ADK's are much busier. I want to avoid "crowds" and don't want to have to stress about finding a camp site. I typically do my trips in the fall or spring while its quiet but I'm just feeling like I gotta get out there.

All that said I am looking for a relaxed trip. I don't mind portages but I'm not looking for them to be arduous. I am also not really looking for any swift water. Again just a relaxed couple days.

So yeah, anyone have any suggestions for that "unicorn" trip?

OH and I will be at the ADK museum Sunday taking Caleb Davis's paddle making class and could start the trip after the class so if there are any ideas for that area it would be convenient. BUT it's not necessary.

Thanks in advance for the input.

Mid-week would be good at this time of year for Lake Lila, Bog River/ Hitchens Pond/ Low's Lake, Little Tupper, Round Lake. They're all reasonably close to Blue Mountain Lake. I know that others will have a lot of suggestions also.

      Trip

How about the St Regis Canoe Area - it is only about a 1 hour drive from Blue Mountain Lake? Long Pond or St Regis Pond - either one is great for a few days.

        St Regis is a potential.
I always like that whole area. A bit busy this time of year though...or so I think.

I'm thinking I like the Lake Lila suggestion.Especially since its on my hit list anyways.... I can take as long as want so is it doable to paddle to or short portage to any of the surrounding bodies of water I see on the map?

            Hmmmmm.......

            Details? This sounds promising.
Off to run my google foo on it but any insight such as put in location and route maps would be very welcome.

You are talking day trips, right?
Right up the road from the museum is South Pond, an overlooked gem. Almost all state land, very picturesque, midweek you probably won't see a soul.
And just down the road is South Inlet (Raquette Lake), 2 mile paddle to a nice set of falls.
You could do Rock Lake, an easy 1/2 mile carry and again, you won't see another boat or person.
There's a 2 mile stretch of the Cedar (Benton Rd put in) that ends at Pashley Falls, slight current, very quiet.
How about the Cedar River Flow? Plenty of camping, real nice flatwater paddling on the upper Cedar River, moose sighted often there.

All of these are within 30 minutes of the museum. BTW, I had a photo of mine chosen for their camping display last season, I wonder if it's still there?

Anyway, check the maps, everything that I have described would be quiet, scenic and likely motor free.

                Day trips

You will be pleasantly surprised at how few people are out there mid week - even in the SRCA. I keep forgetting about South Pond and so have never been. Great write ups in the Quiet Water and Adirondack Paddling books. Yes - Cedar River Flow is quite nice and only about 30 min from the museum.

Eckford Chain details: When I last did this several years ago I put in right at the intersection of 28 & 30. The route is very obvious as you pass thru the lakes. There is a lean-to near the western end of utowana lake. The only portage is the famous Marion River carry for the passenger boats from 1800's taking passengers down the Marion river to Raquette Lake of easy 1/4 mile. There are lean-toos scattered about on Raquette or you could stay @ Burke's cabins on S/W side of the lake,Tioga point campground (If still there) or Golden Beach State C/G.. Shouldn't be too busy. Hope you enjoy!

South Pond does have a fairly steep path down to the water if my recollection serves me right? I remember seeing several boats down by the water chained to tree's.

                    Enjoy

                      Thanks all.
Stripperguy.... my punctuation on that misleads. I meant I want a couple of days in length type trip. Not single day. My bad on that sorry. Thank you for the input regardless.

As of this moment it's a toss up between the Eckford Chain, Lake Lila and Cedar River, in that order.

I'm leaning towards Eckford simply because I will already be in Blue Mtn Lake. That said, I'll sit with my map and start crunching it Saturday morning.

Are any of the three of those least likely to be crowded? Problematic in other ways for a solo trip?
