  • Little Tupper Lake weekend

We had an easy weekend at LTL with perfect weather.
I forgot how easy it is to camp at LTL, no carrying, thunderboxes, great beaches, what more could you ask for??

    Have a look.

Taking a break near site #7

    Just lounging in the sunshine

    Too many bass to count

    Friday's sunset

Spirits were at the campfire again

Lunchbreak on the island on Rock Pond

A total of 5 beaver dams between LTL and Rock, 3 below the old bridge, 2 above

Remnants of the old bridge at the Rock Pond carry

Firewood was sparse at site #12...

All in all, it was a nice, relaxing weekend. I was surprised to see how much had changed on the way to Rock Pond, I suppose that's the effects of Irene?
And Josh and I camped on the island on Rock Pond 11 years ago, how the heck did we ever sleep on that tilted slab??!!
All agreed that Rock was very scenic and well worth the paddle.
Nephew caught and released too many bass to count, even landed a rainbow, he said (I didn't see it). Even bumped into (almost) Rich, from Adirondack Paddle n Pole on our way out.
MDB even became a fan of thunderboxes!!

    Wind

yes a beautiful place, but all 4 times I went there the wind struck. I know it's just chance, but it seems like a curse.

Last month I attempted the LTL to Lila traverse and got turned back due to the wind & waves at about 11 AM. I was fine in my RapidFire (and spray cover), but my friend in an open 12' Hornbeck started taking on water shortly after we hit the open water. Folks coming off the lake (all full sized canoes or kayaks) were happy to be at the take out. Probably the roughest I've seen it there. Painful after spotting a car at Lila.

Plan B was Lila. Same wind resulted in manageable waves there. It was windy for the whole trip. Fortunately paddling into SS Brook was calm.

Mike- Looks like a great trip, and nice pics. LTL is one of my favorite spots.

I think that spirits around the campfire picture needs some explanation.

We got lucky with the wind, even though we had a late start. But MDB did say that bigger water is not her favorite.
I was there once in October of '98 and we had high winds and I took waves over the bow and at my waist!! Later that day, we had sleet and snow...not the best of days. It took us 6 hours to reach the head of the lake.
On Saturday evening, I spoke with a couple guys just coming in, the waves were pretty big then, but they seemed undaunted. A lot depends on the boat. Nice fast, long and slender is about the worst when it comes to those rollers.

            Madison,
those spirits seem to follow us around...especially when I bring along a tripod and everyone has flashlights.

I set my camera on a 20 or 25 second exposure and we all run around like maniacs, lighting our own faces with the flashlights for a moment or two.
We spent about an hour messing around and laughing at all the photos. I have quite a few, but only a few are on my Picasa site.

Nice trip - amazing place when the weather cooperates! Your nephew may have caught one of the unique "Little Tupper" native strain of brook trout - I hooked one when fishing for bass there two years ago. Glad he returned the protected species to the water!

STIPPERGUY: I went up there on 8/17 and came out on 8/20. Your question: "Who could ask for more?" I have one thing: a spot of reflective tape on the thunderbox!! It was a great trip. We stayed at Site 19, which is on one of the islands. On the second day, we crossed the lake and hiked the Burn Road. I note that it's totally overgrown to the point of being a bushwack after a fairly short trek. On the 20th, I woke up at 6AM and heard ominously high winds. By the time that we broke camp and headed back to Headquarters, the winds and rollers were so strong that I would definitely not have put in if we were just starting the trip. I met a couple from New Jersey as we disembarked and told them to consider moving up to Round Lake, which they cheerfully did.
The other thing which surprised me was that there was an over abundance of traffic on the roads and there were short back-ups at the gas stations. At LTL: less than ten cars in the lot near the put in. What a great choice!

Thanks for posting and the pics.

Cool trip report & photos, Mike.
I was almost going to give LTL a shot this weekend, but ended up at my ol' faithful for the third time this summer so far instead.
It would've been great to see you and Lynne up there, even though my beat-up Old Town might have looked a little out of place next to those beautiful boats!
Oh well, maybe next time. It sure was a nice weekend to spend on the water.

                        nutmeg,
I was hoping to see the view from the thunderbox brushed out too, some of them have great views. This one, not so much. There was a faded yellow ribbon on the path to the box, it would be impossible to see it in the dark.
There were 12 cars in the lot when we launched, two of those were ours. For all of the sites, it is surprisingly private, once you settle in to a campsite.

                        Justin,
It would be great to have bumped into you!! Any boat is a fine boat, especially one like yours with all those stories to tell. You know, there's a tale behind every scar...

                        Here's a look at then and now at LTL;

Sign in in 1998, it's hard to see the sign that says "Camping by permit only" and the markers to show which sites were taken (sight unseen)

Sign in 2015, gone is the permit system, signage is showing its age

Here's the sunset point on the island on Rock Pond in 2004

Same spot, this past Saturday ...water level is down about 2 feet

                          wind!

My lovely wife and I went to the launch for our 3 day vacation knowing the wind issue. We went to the launch where it was totally calm, and the forecast said 2 days of
5mph winds. made it to the campsite with ruins of the secretarys camp. beautiful. Windbond for the next 2 days!

Nice pics Mike!! We weren't quite as adventurous but we did spend Friday & Saturday on two different bodies of water in the Adirondacks with our Wee Lassies.

It looks like a very nice place. I will hope to visit it myself someday and in the meantime I enjoy seeing pictures.
