Is the fire tower on blue mountain (assuming there is one and I haven't gotten confused) 'open'? Meaning can you climb the tower and enter the platform?

Also, if driving from syracuse (for a day trip) is this worth it with kids or am I just as well to shorten the drive and tackle black bear mt outside Inlet?

I would rather be paddling but the boys want to climb a Mountain and who am I to say no.

Pretty sure the cab is open. Been a few years since I've been up though, but it's pretty darn popular and you can't see anything unless you get in the tower, so I'm banking it still is.

Black bear is a cool little mountain, but Blue is different. It's much higher, and you can see a lot more once you get above the scrub. IIRC black bear's views are pretty limited, although there are a lot of areas to roam around and look out from.

Thing I hate about Blue: It's a steady climb for 2 miles start to summit. It's not a very interesting climb as I recall either, I think it's pretty easy, just relentless.

Black Bear has about 180 degree views as I recall, though it has been a few years since I was there. It has three trailheads that can be used to climb it and I like the one on Uncas Rd. Blue is higher and has a fire tower, but the summit itself is much less open so I didn't find it quite as scenic. I like being a little closer to things but on the other hand you can see farther from a taller mountain.
