  • Cheap Sleeps in the Adks

What places (hotels, inns, etc.) have people stayed in the High Peaks region that are decent but inexpensive (or at least reasonable)? And within an hour or so of Lake Placid (like in Schroon Lake, Long Lake, Keene, Keene Valley, etc.)? The Lake Placid rates get a bit painful...staying at a hostel sounds fun but when 4 people go (three kids and I) you may as well stay in a hotel...

    Thanks,
    Pat Connors

If you do decide on a hostel, the Jack Rabbit Hostel and the Keene Hostel come to mind. Do NOT go to the High Peaks Hostel in Lake Placid. Click here to learn why.

I've never stayed at a Hotel up there. I bring a tent instead or just stay home and head out earlier. But with kids it's another story...

The Adirondak Loj has a cabin they rent out. It has 2 sets of bunk beds, bathroom and kitchen. Since they only have one cabin they rent out I'm not sure how fast it books up. I stayed in in with my kids and wife one fall, and I think it's like $100/night. I don't know how much you want to spend, but if you're cooking your own food at the cabin instead of eating out you're saving $ that way. They also have canvas cabins with bunkbeds in them. Basically a tent on a wooden platform. $32 for two people, $2.50 each additional person. Their website is ADK.org.
Hope this helps, but don't really know if that's the kind of accomodations you were looking for.

Upper Jay: The Brookside Inn. $65, 2 or 3 rooms plus a full kitchen.
Keene: The Woodruff $45 (cash). 2 double beds. A little musty.
Half-way between the above 2. The Ark Trail. $50. Surpisingly nice rooms. 2 Double beds. Kettle, micro-wave, toaster and mini-fridge. TV only gets 1 channel.

IIRC, none of the above have phones in the rooms.

Try to find a motel with a sign reading "Neil hasn't slept here"

              Neil knows his hotels.......

Do I ever. One place I stayed in was in the Southern Dacks: Hawk's Hacienda. Hah! Talk about flea bitten. Reasonable prices but don't order the fondue.

Kish Duna in Schroon is very nice. My family has been going there for 20+ years. Great people, reasonable rates, clean rooms. Their beach is the best on Schroon, in my opinion.

Right in Lake Placid is the St. Moritz. Don't let the lobby or the unique management throw you - rooms are basic, but clean and I think it's about $50 for a room with two queen size beds.
As somebody else said, the Woodruff in Keene isn't too bad and you can't beat the price.

Cheapest sleep I ever had was in the back of my mini-van. Does the DEC have anything to say about practice of car-crashing. It's highly illegal in Banff National Park.

Well, I'm not sold on Orbitz... and here's part of the reason why [NAUGHTY LANGUAGE WARNING]:

Neil, I've never heard anything about regulations regarding car camping.
