  • Moose River Plains UMP Amendment

Still in the draft phase, but as some may recall, the IMBA submitted a proposal to the DEC for adding mountain bike trails to Moose River Plains Wild Forest.

You can view the new draft and the original proposal at the bottom of this page:

My two cents are as such:

Not a lot of what the IMBA threw in was considered. I didn't suspect that would be the case. What the DEC has proposed with the draft is much cleaner and leaves much of the wild parts of MRPWF undisturbed. Most of the development is linking into existing snowmobile trail networks and is near more intensive use areas i.e. nearer to RT 28 and Inlet.

It looks like a good compromise that won't affect too much of the natural character of the area.

The DEC will be accepting comments until July 8th to the contact below:

Did anyone make any comments to this?

I'm hoping we will hear an answer soon on whether or not the proposal has been accepted.

We're coming up on a year since comments were closed. I've yet to hear anything decisive... perhaps if these trails were to be built, I'd like to ride them in my lifetime, but it's not looking good the way things move

I have a query into the IMBA for anyone who has been following or has any interest as to what the status is. We should get an update sometime this month.

For those of you who aren't bikers, this may be good news for you though. These new trails will bypass most of the snow machine trails and provide a network for skiers to use the WF lands more and not be run off by snow machines. I suggested that IMBA look into what the APSA has proposed to see if some conditions could be met to make summer bike trails more usable Nordic ski trails in the winter. Much of this would be trail planning in terms of runoff grading for summer use and providing adequate width with steeper pitches for skiers. Perhaps not a full width trail, but a "gladed" sections to keep the natural character as well as the single track character for bikers.

I got no response regarding this interaction, but perhaps will try again.

I'm almost sure a solution can be made. These type of groups need to work together or we'll be left playing second fiddle to snow machines and vehicles.

A reference to APSA ski trail design proposal:

It will be interesting to see what resources will be left over from the 750 mile Empire State trail. Building stacked loops is expensive. Is there local involvement willing to get out and dig? I recall that there was a local group but not the details. I wonder where the MRP management and rangers stand on building new MTB/MUT's?

There are no stacked loops, none of them made it to the final proposal.

I had the same questions about building which I posed to the IMBA. I was told the state would be paying a professional crew to build most of the trail and the rest would be completed and maintained by volunteers. I assume the IMBA would be organizing the volunteer work as there is no local org that I know of.

Have you tried contacting the folks at Pedals and Petals in Inlet?

I have not recently. I have talked to the owner (Ted I believe his name is) about trail building in the area. He said there is just no interest from locals to build and maintain trails.

Thing is, when I ride out there, I always see a few other people. And I know people ask about riding in the area. There is definitely some interest and lots of tourists in the area who mountain bike.
