  • Help replacing bike saddle

    Hello,

I need to replace the saddle on my bike because something got in my shed and destroyed the one that is currently on the bike. I have a new saddle. But, when I tried to remove the old saddle, I couldn't loosen the f*&#ing bolt. I am using a 6 mm allen wrench. I sprayed it with WD40 and tapped it lightly with a hammer, but it won't budge. Any suggestions? Should I just replace the whole seat post?

Is the bike in the Adirondacks? If not, I can't help

Seriously though, WD-40 is worthless. Go to the HW store and get some penetrating oil like PB plaster or Thrust. Douse the threads with that, then let it sit overnight or longer. Longer is better.

Then have at it again. If it's a no-go I'd pull the seat post off and go to a bike shop. See if they can loosen it. You might just need a better wrench and likely they'll have a better one that you're using. Or it might be seized. If it is, get a new post.

Try heating it with a propane torch if you have one....an old plumbing trick to help loosen old threaded metal connections.

Make sure the allen wrench you are using really fits well in the bolt head and if it does you could take something that will slide over the long end of the allen wrench and act as a mini cheater pipe to give you more leverage. If the fit of the allen wrench in the hex socket is not really good you'll just strip out the head of the bolt which will only lead to further troubles.

If you're in Edinburg, take it down to Neal at The Bike Works in Johnstown .

Well, yes, I am in the southern Adirondacks, but you did help.

The PB Blaster did the trick, and in only about 10 minutes. Thanks
            so much for the suggestion.
