  • Rock Pond

A trip report of sorts. I still use disposable cameras so this will be pretty weak.

Left the put in at Little Tupper at 6:15 am Thursday. Winds light.

Three hours later arrive at Rock Pond. Nobody there.

Set up camp on the island.

Explored pond - campsite closest to the Hardigan portage (26?) destroyed by fallen trees.

Later in afternoon cow moose swam to the island, walked to within 70 ft of the campsite, turned around and swam back. Dog just stood and stared.

Used fish finder in a grid around pond. A bunch of that pond is very shallow - 3-4 feet.

Got into 12 bass on Friday - a couple of decent sized fish. Highly concentrated.

Paddled out Sat. am at 10:30. Never saw a soul on the pond. Met one day tripper by the portage on way out.

Tupper Lake wind came from the north on the way out for my first time in 20 years. Fun paddle back. Got out and tracked along the shore for long distance. Happy to report not one speck of trash.

LT is a gem. Spent years cutting kids canoeing teeth here years back.

Have not caught a brookie out of there in 10-12 years - miss them.

Amazing to have all of Rock Pond to ones self for that duration.

Time to hang up the paddles till spring. Steelhead right around the corner to get me through winter while I compile the list of next years trips.

Hope all of your paddling seasons went well!

Thanks for the report. Actually debating doing this exact trip or Middle Saranac this weekend!!

Question for you: One of the four going is an avid fly fisherman. How are the creeks near the south end for fishing?
I sometimes put a wool hat or mitt over my nose, across my face, but not to cover my nostrils, just to keep my nose warm. You have to pay the piper somewhere for this kind of fun

        Hello Rachel's Dad,

I did bring a fly rod but didn't break it out.

I did cover the pond pretty well with my fish finder and did not mark any fish by any of the steams. At that point the fish were highly concentrated over the deepest part of the pond, but with the proper fly line/fly combo I could have reached them. They were very eager to hit the stick baits we were using so we just stayed with those.

I have had good luck in previous years working the deeper water by some of the islands. I started there on this trip - but didn't have any success which is why I started the grid pattern with the fish finder.

Good luck - if you go I hope Mrs. Moose pays you a visit. That made the entire trip for us. We have come across moose twice before in the back-country but have never watched one heading straight for us from a distance. Pretty wild.

          Thank you sir.

My buddy prefers stream fishing...yeah, one of those guys...So I'll fib and tell him the streams are chocked full of 12 inchers.

Hopefully the weather will hold as the other two guys are made of sugar and dread the wet.

We're getting together for late lunch Wednesday...coin flip for this or Middle Saranac.

Perhaps the moose will sway them!!

          Thanks again.

The fishing was really good for 10.000 years.

Hay, the Trout fishing was great for 10,000 yrs, until some A Hole decided to dump a bucket of Bass into one of the most pristine trout waters in the East. That's not global warming , that's criminal !

Viking: Nice report, the moose sighting must have been awesome. What was the situation with the beaver dams heading into Rock Pond from LT? Last I was there about 2 years ago it seemed virtually impassable.

                      Hey KeanGrad,

Dams not too bad at all.

Maybe 4 from Little Tupper up to the portage and 1 between the portage and the pond. Also a couple of small ones we paddled right over.

Note - on our way up, right after the portage where you would normally put in the water was low enough we had to extend our carry another another 70 yards or so. I unloaded the heavier stuff and tracked upstream but watch your footing on the stream bed and stream bank. Some tricky rocks and mud to contend with.

It is a bit more to deal with than my previous trips up there. Might partially explain the lack of people when we went.
