  • 3 or 4 day loop ideas with a large dog

    Hello all!

My friend and I are planning a 3-4 day loop hike that is also appropriate for my Bernese Mountain Dog who is used to backpacking trips and carrying his own pack. We are both experienced hikers but have never been to the Adirondacks before. Any suggestions of suitable loops that have low to moderate traffic (with some great views!) would be awesome. Thanks in advance for any advice! Cheers.

Good loop hike to serve as an intro to the Adirondacks. No real elevation to deal with. Add a side trip to the top of Cat Mt and catch the sunrise. I would plan to camp at either High Falls or High Rock for one night.

Cranberry Lake and the lands that surround it provide some of the best hiking, biking, paddling, fishing, skiing and camping experiences available in the Adirondack Park. Enjoy forests, water, wildlife, peace and natural beauty. The Cranberry Lake 50 trails are the perfect way to experience it all.

Also a loop through the Cold River. Start at Corey's Road down to Duck Hole, NPT or Horse Trails to Shattucks Clearing. Then head back to Corey's Rd.

The 204,000 acre High Peaks Wilderness is the largest wilderness area in the Adirondacks as well as the most popular destination. The wilderness contains 34 of the ADK 46ers including the tallest peak in the state, Mount Marcy. There are seventy lean tos as well as well over 200 miles of hiking trails including the Northville-Placid Trail, which is very popular with backpackers.

Not sure when you are planning this- if it's soon, access is limited in winter to the trailheads of many wilderness loops. The Ha-De-Ron-Dah wilderness area just south of Old Forge would be a loop accessible in winter- the trailhead is right on Rt28. It's not long enough for 3-4 trip though. The West Canada Lakes wilderness area has a great loop passing several wilderness lakes with lean-to's. You could get 3-4 days with side trips. It's difficult to get to in winter though.

Thanks for the suggestions; we will definitely look into them!

In response to the season, we are planning for the early summer. Maybe a winter trip will be another future endeavour!

Since it's a summer trip then I strongly recommend the west canada lake wilderness. Start and end at the southern Pillsbury mountain trailhead, combining the Cedar Lake, French Louie, and Northville Placid trails. The loop itself is only about 20 miles but you can add overnight side trips to Spruce and Brooktrout lakes to increase the time and distance. This is a beautiful and remote area and well worth the visit.

A recent trip through the Ha-De-Ron-Dah Wilderness near Old Forge was fun...
