  • PBW Spitfire Seats

I recently acquired a used Spitfire. After years of rowing my beloved guideboat, it's just too difficult to portage (It's wood, 65 lb., I'm 71 and weaker than I used to be.) As for the boat, it is set up w/ a bottom seat for use with a double bladed paddle, but I prefer to use a single blade. The boat has cherry gunwales, and I'm wondering about the feasability of setting up a paddling thwart. It currently has two thin diameter laminated thwarts, but I'm not sure I'd trust kneeling and leaning my back against one of them. Any suggestions?

I believe you can purchase a higher seat from Placid Boatworks that you place over the existing seat. This will put you higher without having to alter your boat in any way. I would suggest you call them and speak to them about what would work best for your situation. I haven't dealt with them much but they were more than willing to answer my questions and help where they could.

That's all for now. Take care and until next time....be well.

When I purchased my Rapidfire they told me the thwarts aren't designed to hold your weight, so don't sit or kneel on them. There are different seat heights they can install, so as was mentioned earlier best to talk to them to hear their suggestions.

Ask Joe about the high seat on rails that will give you trim adjustment fore and aft. Joe installed one for me after removing the standard low glued-in seat because I prefer a higher seat for single blade paddling. Joe did the same on his personal RF because it is the best height and tilt for racing, as he does every year in the 90-miler.
