  • Adirondack Eats?

    First post, so be gentle...

Looking for good places to eat in the High Peaks area(s) after a day hike for the wife and I. Doesn't have to be super-fancy, but on the other hand, not some place that's a total dive.

    Your input is appreciated

I've always had a hard time finding someplace too.

I guess my favorite informal and friendly place is the Black Bear in Lake Placid.

Can't think of the name of the place but if you tke the road from lake Placid toward Tupper Lake, on the left hand side there is a restaurant that specializes in BBQ (It has many other options too!). You will recognize it by the dining area that is outside under a pavilion.

I have eaten there a couple of times and the food and service is excellent nd the prices are reasonable.

Yea I think that place is in Ray Brook between Placid and Sarancac. In Sept. we did the Canoe Classic and a number of local residents went there to eat after, guess that's a good sign. Also I've been to the Noonmark Diner in Keene, nothing fancy but the food was good, the waitress was very pleasant and they have about 20 kinds of homemade pies with ice cream for dessert.

You folks are referring to "Tail of the Pup" and it's truly a landmark up here. Dunno why really, but the buses keep stopping there.

Mrs. Alpine & myself have had many good eats on the porch of the Downhill Grill which is on rt 73, just a 3-wood or so from the intersection with rt 86 & next door to an IGA grocery store. Tasty margaritas too.

Honorable mention goes to Pete's Steakhouse, located amidst the tourist heaven known as Lake Placid. Same side of the road & close to EMS and overlooking Mirror Lake. Try the Haystack sandwich.

          Bon appetite

If you're into Diners (I am, unfortunate for my stomach) I have had good breakfast stuff at the Noonmark Diner in Keene on a few occassions. Nothing fancy and the price is right. Rate of indigestion minimal .

I'm thinking of trying breakfast in placid this weekend, anyone have any suggestions?

              The other Black Bear....

in Wilmington, about a 1/4 mile east of the bridge over the ausable is really good. Their toast is the best. It is a perfect spot to stop when you come off of Whiteface/Esther Kevin.

There is andsother Black Bear in Chestertown, not for breakfast though, it is good for burgers hot sanddwhiches and you can get a beer there too.

There is a place near Chestertown I have not found yet, nut have heard great things about, It is called "The Place". I f anyone knows anything about it please share.

                  Mike,
Sorry to correct, but it's only 9 or 10 minutes from mi casa and I go by there many times.
That's the Country Bear in Wilmington and yep - even the toast is good.

In Keene, the best place for dinner is the Tip-a-Canoe, It is right in Keene, not far from the taxidermist.

For lunch, in Keene Valley, the best place is the Keene Valley Market Place, it is opposite McDonough's hardware.

Another place is the Baxter Mountain INn on route 9N a few miles east of the intersection with Route 73. These are all appropriate for a family.

In Lake Placid, the options increase. Sometimes, I just like buffet food and Goldberry's is good buffet. The Lake Placid Brewery is good pub food, I like their "Colorado" sandwhich which is a grilled chicken breast sandwhich. There is a mexican restaurant, I forget the name of it though, that is quite good. I'll go there for dinner tomorrow night and I'll come back and post it next week.

For me it depends on what direction I am going after the hike and where the trailhead is. I live in Albany and I won't drive to Lake Placid for dinner, even if hiking from the Loj, because it's not on the way home.

If I'm stopping anywhere, it's usually the Noonmark Diner in Keene Valley. It's usually good and fast and pretty cheap. I also sometimes go to Pitkins or DeCesare's in Schroon Lake. Pitkins is a barbecue place right on Main St. and DeCesare's is a pizza/Italian place just south of the village. The Place is another Italian restaurant in Chestertown. The food and service is good. Take Route 9 past the Black Bear restaurant on Pottersville and go south and you will go right past it.

                          Good Eats

Does anyone know if Montys Elm Tree Inn is still open in Keene?
I heard he was sick and the last time through it was closed.
A great place to eat is Terrios in Schroon Lake, It is closed from Jan to May though.

                            PJ's

We usually go back into Placid after an outting, so PJ ONeils (Lake Placid Pub and Brewery) is usually our stop. They have great pub chow and even better brew!

The Elm Tree is decidely and sadly not open.

Nothing really fills the void it's absence created. The Ausable Inn makes a good piece of meat though and is worth going to for dinner.

Prior to homeownership in Keene Valley, I ate frequently at the Noonmark Diner. Every time I walked out of there I swore it would be my last time. It was the service that took longer than it should have by thirty minutes or it was the 'open faced hot turkey sandwhich' that was deli meat on a white bread with cold gravy or it was charging me extra for an extra tub of syrup. I've come to terms with the Diner though and appreciate it for what it does best, and that is breakfast. IMHO, if you have to lunch, go to the keene valley marketplace and if you have to dine, the tip-a-canoe.
