  • Sleeping Beauty and Bumps Pond

First hike of the spring and a nice day.

First hike for Caney since he declined to hike for the first time in his life on Feb 2nd. Even way back in 2000, after loosing 50% of his blood volume 2 weeks before, he summited 2 Catskill 3500 winter peaks in the same day. This was a good hike for him, and also Aimee Bear after her winter of hibernation to stretch the old legs.

Nothing like getting to sleep in till 9am after a winter of 2,3,4,5am starts.

Bumps was still slightly frozen and we actually missed the summit of Sleeping Beauty. I saw a trail marker to the right and proceeded that way and the summit was perhaps a few hundred feet or yards to the left. Oh well, good excuse to go back.

Dacy clearing road is currently closed. So you will have to walk the road. It was passable IMO with 2WD all the way to the horse trail and old foundation (assuming the gate was open). It got significantly muddy, rocky and rutted after this point, and 4WD or AWD with some clearance would be recommended.

Not too pretty out there yet, but the skeleton forest is slowly coming to life.

    Pico,
The summit of Sleeping Beauty is a great place with a fantastic view. You should definitely go back.

Looks like a great start to the season. Glad to hear Caney's feeling better. Nice shots. Jan's right. Sleeping Beauty has nice views east and west. We did it last year on my wife's birthday.

Here's a view on the Sleeping Beauty summit on 10/05. Hazy in the distance but you get the idea.

          Hi, Pico

Nice pix. I love hiking in that area.

Is your last shot from Bumps Pond? Or is it one of the cellar holes at Dacy Clearing?

Hard to believe, but I first climbed Sleeping Beauty 40 years ago. We hiked from the Girl Scout camp, spent a night near the clearing, then climbed SB and hiked back. At the time, I think it was the highest mountain I had ever climbed--and I was hooked.

Last summer I climbed SB (you should go back!) then went on to Bumps. At the north end of the pond there is an old trail going north that leads to another view point. There wasn't much of a herd path but I did see an occasional old trail marker. The views were really nice.

If you go again, and if you have time, it is worth the extra trip to go on to Fishbrook Pond!
