  • Heading North...

Well I can't remember whether I threw this up here or not, but I'm heading up to camp Alaska for three months in Denali, the Kenai and the Copper River Valley. I need to upgrade my camera and would love a digital SLR, but think I'm settling on just below for if nothing else the portability and pricing. I was looking at the Canon PowerShot S5 IS and was hoping anyone on here could give a review or even just a "its not bad" or "I've heard good/bad things." It'll mostly be landscape stuff I'm shooting, so thats my only real concern.

Thanks a ton guys and I'll make sure to post some when I get back.

I don't know that camera, but I found this website very helpful when I bought a new camera a few years ago.

      Is S3

      Hi,

I have the IS S3 and love it and have had excellent results. Both landscapes, last year on the JMT and also using the telephoto for wildlife. Actually just upgraded to a Pentax SLR. Let me know if you would like anymore info.

      Adella

PS Jan asked me to repond since I have the camera.

Thanks, between reviews and such I figured I
d give it a shot, so I bought it yesterday. I'll let you guys know how it goes. I think I'm heading up to the ADKs on thursday/friday to break the boots in before Alaska, so it should be a good trial for the camera as well.

Well, a little update on the Canon I5 IS... So far so good. Took it to a SkyChiefs game on Saturday, did real well with action shots (ie batter's swings/mid-pitch shots), minimal blur on the auto settings and nothing at all when I actually set stuff manually. Ease of use is great, apparently people are noticing some massive quality drop when using higher ISO settings though. Need to get a full scale landscape test in before I head north to run this thing through the ringer.
