Porter Mtn trailhead

There used to be a trailhead on Rt 73 that led to both Cascade and Porter.

I know DEC just opened a new trail to Cascade from the Mt Van Ho complex.

Is the trail to Porter still on 73? Somewhere else?

Thanks.

There are three ways to Porter via trails:

Cascade Pass Trailhead: As of now, this trailhead and trail are still open, and have always been the easiest way to Porter. The new trail from Van Ho has not yet been completed, to my knowledge, and the current trail from Cascade Pass has certainly not been closed. The trail is a heavily traveled highway to the Cascade / Porter junction. Past that, the short trip to Porter is less traveled and in poor condition (lack of maintenance) and usually wet.

Marcy Field (Airport Road) Trailhead: This trailhead is also on Route 73. This is the "hard way" to Porter. Much longer and more vertical, makes Porter feel like a "real mountain." The trail is open and in good shape as far as Blueberry Mountain. Past Blueberry, the last time I was there a couple years ago the trail was a mess (lack of maintenance) covered with blowdown and mud puddles.

Garden Trailhead: This trail passes over Little Porter and on to Porter. This trail is closed as of last year. (This has nothing to do with this summer's Garden Road closure for the bridge replacement.) Part of this trail crossed private land. The private landowner has requested that it be closed, and to my knowledge a reroute has not yet been constructed.

It's hard to believe they would still have the route to Porter starting on 73. It would have to cross the route to Cascade, and then everyone would keep on taking that (shorter) route. I imagine coming to Porter from that side will have the same starting point as Cascade.

You are certainly right. Only 46ers and aspiring 46ers even know or care about Porter. Everyone else views this as "the Cascade trail." That trail, the "Cascade and Porter" trail, is slated to be relocated to start at Van Ho, and it will be a long trudge.

Seems it would make more sense to open the new trail AND leave the existing one. Simply mark the parking areas (which they already did, didn't they?) at the Route 73 trailhead, with appropriate signs that any vehicle not parked in a marked spot is subject to a ticket and towing (and then do that - shouldn't take too many people getting one or both to let others know they are serious).
That way, those who get there early can choose to take either route (and some would choose the longer one, just as they do now on other hikes that offer options), and once one is filled the rest would be required to use the one that has space available (which is similar to the "normal" setup with the Garden - one the parking is filled there everyone else has to go to the secondary parking area).

With the Garden, though, the alternative isn't a longer hike- just a different parking spot with a shuttle to the same trailhead.

The potential issue with your suggestion (in the absence of a similar shuttle) is that you'll have late comers showing up at 11 am, 12 pm, 1 pm, etc., expecting a 4 mile round trip hike, only to find themselves faced with a 10 mile round trip hike from the "overflow trailhead" instead. And not everyone will make the choice to consider an alternative destination when faced with that reality- and accordingly, I think there would be a non-insignificant increase in rangers getting called out to search for overdue hikers.

Any progress on a re-route of the Porter trail from the Garden? More or less moot for awhile because of bridge construction, but still interested.

I just got the new ADK High Peaks map, and the trail to Porter from the Garden is marked "Trail closed 2018". A proposed reroute is also shown, but I emphasize the word "proposed".
