Fall Camping on a lake Suggestions for this weekend!! please!

Hi All,

I'm new to the forums but not new to the hiking and camping life! I am new to the lake camping and fishing aspect though. A couple friends and were planning to camp out in Saranac Lake this weekend but the boat rental is just not going to work out at this moment.

Anyone have suggestions for a nice lake that allows shoreline camping that doesn't need boat access. Short hike or driving in is best as I have friends who are very new to this and want to bring in slowly.

Indian Lake campgrounds are closed but can i go in and camp off season or is that illegal?

Any suggestions would be appreciated as we plan to head out this Friday morning. Last minute i know!

Welcome rdayday.
Just an FYI... There is a short trail off Route 3 opposite the trail to Ampersand Mountain that leads to a campsite at the southeastern end of Middle Saranac Lake. Or maybe try the NPT along Long Lake. Thirteenth Lake comes to mind also, as does Rock Lake off Routes 28 & 30.

Please remember to review the Fishing regulations, as the general trout season closes today. If you are looking for spotted fishes, make sure you are on a lake with an extended season.

Check the regulations by County section, or use the search function to see if there is a specific page for your lake.

Dress warm! Looking pretty chill this weekend. 20's at night.

Wow! you guys are awesome and appreciate the suggestions! There wasn't a lot of information online that i found about the lakes. Will look into all the suggestions.

You guys definitely came through for me and will be taking a lot of awesome pictures to post here. We definitely are aware of what's in season but will only be catch and release.

I did see the weather and its looking real cold but that's why i fattened up all summer for this :rolling:

Just came back from Yosemite a little over a month ago and I have been itching to go camping again regardless of weather.

All cool, but please be aware that if you choose a waterbody that is not extended season and is a trout monoculture, like most of the ponds, you can't fish, C+R or not. It is a violation to target fish that are out of season. Look for a bigger lake with an extended trout season, or one that you know has significant warm water populations.
