More forest rangers

I am not sure if I can post this on here.

I have talked to few forest rangers and they want everyone contact the governor and tell them to add additional forest rangers in ADK. here is news article about a town speaking up to add more forest rangers.

Hmm
Senators dont write the budget
State assembly does

Jsullivan524 11-20-2017 06:34 PM

According to the senate website they talk about the budget

According to NYS Senate they have some say about the budget https://www.nysenate.gov/issues/budget

Letters sent. Thanks, Jim, for providing the platform to write.

I think it's worthwhile to write, even though the rank and file Senators and Assemblymen have little influence.

The budget is not written by the Senate. And it is not written by the Assembly. It is written by "three men in a room" - The Governor, the Assembly Majority Leader, and the Senate Majority Leader. Then it's simply given to the rank and file, and they are told to vote for it.

I called Elise Stefanik and the governor and yelled at their staff pretty badly. :gripe:

Buckladd 11-28-2017 03:27 PM

Good luck with that. The trend is downward for both ECOs and Forest Rangers. There is a fraction of what there used to be. The major cost isn't salary, it's benefits.

Meanwhile, ECOs are picking up garbage in NYC (Gov's order) right in the middle of deer season when they're needed the most. So, you know where the priorities lie with this state.

Seriously? When and why did this come about?

Jsullivan524 12-22-2017 03:23 AM

When the governor sends a team of forest rangers out of the state it puts lack of resources for here at home, while there is team of forest rangers out west and same time there is missing hiker there would be less forest rangers helping find the missing hiker.

Someone told me Warren County had 9 forest rangers back in the 80's when there was less land, today they only have about 5 forest rangers and more land the DEC brought.

TCD 12-23-2017 09:47 PM

That's correct. Statewide, Rangers per acre of State Land is down 50% from 1970.

I would like to say thank you everyone for signing the petition and happy holidays.

I meet regularly with my Senator and Assemblyman. I brought this up last week when I met with them. My assemblyman is a retired trooper, so he understood.

I was invited to sit on a government committee that was to decide how funds were to be distributed for various projects. I was pretty much told which projects were approved and how to vote, just as you say.

Why not start using a permit system for parking, hiking etc. The income would help pay to hire more of the rangers. Also start charging for the rescue of lost /unprepared people. Every time they go out to rescue someone the cost is amazing. Hiking insurance would be fairly inexpensive. Hike the White Mts. in NH and it is required.

The solution is always more financial burden on the average Joe. How about renegotiating the lucrative benefits packages of the rangers?

One of the things i like about ny is easy access to outdoors
Very few permits/fees compared to other states
I wouldnt get out any where near as much as i do if i had to worry about permits every time i wanted to go out
Pa has strict permit requirements i rather drive 4-5 hrs to ny than deal with pa permits
You mention primitive camping to a pa ranger and they are ready to arrest you

Everybody always wants something for nothing I guess
