Marion River Carry Access Status

In 2013 OSI acquired the lands around the carry area:

http://www.adirondackalmanack.com/20...-property.html

Shortly after that it was thought that the state of NY might acquire the property and add it to the forest preserve:

http://www.adirondackalmanack.com/20...ver-carry.html

Does anyone know of any update on the status of this area? I was hoping that by now, four years later, one might be able to enter the property at the carry and launch a canoe or kayak.

Is the only access to the Eckford chain (other than from Raquette L. or from the public beach on Blue Mtn L.) STILL from the shoulder of Route 28 onto Utowana Lake?

Has anyone heard anything about the status of the Carry property and land access to it?

Hm...double post...
I've used the beach at Blue Mountain for years (like 50) ...it's a nice short and pleasant paddle to the carry. I've never used it but the access on 28 is about as close and convenient to the carry as you could ask for.... the carry itself is interesting and very short. Where are you hoping to access? Do you want to avoid loading and unloading to cross from 28 to the ferry dock?

The put in at the Rt 28 pull of is , as said above , about as easy as it gets. Much easier than if you could carry down the road to the canoe carry trail, unless you want to drive in there to the carry with a large parking lot etc, and that is not going to happen.

The Rt 28 pull off puts you with 100 feet of the lake with a leanto right across the lake, very nice leanto but you can hear the road traffic at night. It would take you all of 5 minutes to paddle to the carry. Very nice body of water to paddle with little to no boat traffic, (except for the weekend after Labor Day when many of us on this forum with several hundred of our friends paddle through).

I don't believe the access has changed. There is private land owned by Marion River Carry Railroad Co. between Rt. 28 and OSI's on the river. Likely intended to be that way. I think the purpose of OSI's acquisition was to preserve the carry for public use, not to improve access there.

I read this morning that NYS has finally settled the Marion Carry and Raquette property disputes...those disputes go back 100 years!!

Of more interest to me is the donation of over 130 acres of previously disputed land to NYS. This Sucker Brook Bay includes 3,000 ft of shoreline and some of the trail to West Mt.

That might open up an impractical loop including Shallow Lake and Cranberry Pond.

OSB,
I've been looking at that loop for a few years, but I was previously reluctant to commit for a few reasons. The unknown status of private land on Raquette was a factor, as well as the usual physical and topographical challenges.
Unfortunately, I have much more free time than my usual gang of four, so it's hard to get the guys to dive in...

Marion River Carry Access Status

Guys,

As long as we're talking impractical loops, take a look at Sucker Brook Bay
beach to Brown Tract Ponds to Shallow Lake to Cascade Lake to Chain Ponds
to Queer Lake to Chubb Lake to Constable Pond over West Mountain back to
Shallow Brook Bay beach.

Only impractical part is the bushwack from Shallow to Cascade. Everything
else is trail, in theory.
