updates on Ice out
Hello all
Time for the spring ice out at Lows Lake, does anyone have any idea how the ice is moving out?

TCD 04-09-2018 10:50 AM

I have no direct report. But temperatures in Saranac Lake have been cold. Sunday's low and high were 7F and 27F; this morning's low was 9F. Ice may be slow to leave with single digit lows and sub-freezing highs...

A week ago, all the Fulton Chain, Tupper, and the Saranacs that we’re visible from the road were white and completely iced over, except small areas near where rivers and streams entered. Today, near Rome, Delta Lake is similarly solid white. Nights have consistently been below 20F, days barely 30F. So I have little hope for Lows and any other interior waters to become clear and open any time soon

I was in the North Hudson area again this past weekend checking out some of the unofficially marked hiking trails to nearby ponds...still lots of solid ice that I walked out on in the shadowy bays, some thawing along the sunny shores & in the channels, and I even saw 2 geese floating in one of the thawed sections. My best guess is it’ll be at least another couple weeks before ice out in this region. I’d post a couple photos to share but it’s kind of a bit of a process on this website.

Glen Lake, in the Lake George area is not quite there, but close. Usually, the ponds 1,000 feet higher in elevation are one - two weeks behind that.

Ice in and ice out follow a pretty regular schedule (when viewed WRT decades).
Here is a link to a paper that tracks the dates through recent history. The paper serves to comfort those anxious to see soft water again while simultaneously reminding us of very real climate change...

Interesting article from ESF, the most significant change occurred in the 1890's from 1870. Ice-in getting noticeably later over the last couple decades for any recent trends.

TCD 04-10-2018 03:26 PM

Yes, very interesting. 1870s were the tail end of the Little Ice Age.

I wouldn't read too much into those records from 1870s through 90s. There were only a couple of observations (n) compared to the more recent data set.

Ice out at Old Forge Pond??
Looking that way from the Town of Webb webcam today

Wldrns 04-12-2018 06:39 PM

Be careful of trusting conditions based on webcams that are placed near where water flows, such as where the OF webcam is located near the dam. It can look open but still be iced not far away. If I put one at just the right place on Delta Lake near Rome, just yesterday I would see geese floating and blue herons fishing on the shore of a watery bay, but the main lake body is still quite icy and impassable. Certainly past history shows that Delta melts wide open well before most Adirondack lakes.

Taylor Pond north of Whiteface was well frozen over yesterday with up to two ft of snow in the woods west of it.

Watch these webcams for ice-out on Adirondack lakes.

Heading up to the SRCA in mid may to do some (hopefully) pond hopping. Everything still locked up there? I'm hoping to not have to weld an auger to the front of the Any info appreciated! Thanks!!

Nehasane 04-16-2018 05:45 PM

Ice should be out in the SRCA by end of April - mid-May should be no problem.

Old man winter just doesn't want to yield

Getting there, off the edges of Upper Saranac Lake, what ice that is there, has appearance of skim ice. Hoping by next week....

Connecticut Yankee 04-17-2018 07:32 PM

Yesterday, the really strong wind and waves were breaking up the ice in the village of Tupper Lake, Lake Clear is still thick ice but looking a bit black. Upper Saranac is still tight, but again is starting to have the look of black ice. The sun is doing it's thing, but the weather over the next week is still looking cold, Weather channel is saying 3-5" of snow, Th-Fr. The water always shows early along the shore in front of the Upper Saranac Lake Assn web cam. That said a week doesn't sound out of the realm of possibility, I'll go 10 days.
I haven't taken the snow tires off yet and I don't plan on taking my kayak up next week when I head up to camp.

I came through Long lake Yesterday morning. The north side of the bridge was thawed quite a ways out. the south side was solid ice
