I consider noseeums/punkies the most disruptive of all the biting / chewing / stinging insects. I am very sensitive to their bites, like fire!

And they are attracted to light, so they invade camp,...

We did that paddle 45 years ago with the BSA. I remember cranberry bogs and associated infrastructure. That and having a wet behind on the drive home that evening. Spent a lot of time in the water!
