I've used instep crampons and had nothing but trouble with them. I think most crampons that are not the partial instep deal are probably OK. Years back I went to plastic boots and 12 point crampons....

I stayed in many lean-to's over the years and have never had a serious problem with biting insects. Maybe once or twice I put a bit of bug juice on my face. Really no big problem though.
