With the relatively small developing moose population, it may not need to be "a widespread problem" to impact growth of the herd.

One particular case that I can identify occurred on route 29a...

Indeed this is true. In my area of the southern ADKs, there are many local residents who hunt from their backyards for deer specifically and use illegal baiting - and do it out of season.

Moose population dropping?

Latest estimate for ADK moose is about 400. This is down significantly from previous estimates of around 1,000. Too bad - but the habitat may not be the best with older growth forest on state lands....

Almost every year including this year I see tracks in my 1/4 mile long driveway in the southern ADKs. Always in the Sept. to Nov. timeframe - looking for mates I guess.

Slightly warmer weather and (this is the big one) a bountiful food supply. Here in the Pocono region there are a gazzilion acorns among other things to feed on. We regularly get 500-700 pounders...
