If the area is remote, the tracks likely belong to a wolf, so be careful out there.

But once my friend gave me a bear canister to try it on the hike, and I liked it so much that I bought one for own usage.

It is much heavier...

I've heard a lot about using electric fence while hiking/camping.

Perfect for short hikes in the bear's area. But for long ones, it's useless unless you will find a place to recharge the battery....

I think the most important is to start with a day hike (or camping) and go for longer hikes when a dog is used to it enough.
As Just already mentioned, using a leash is very important.

I use canisters in bear country only.
