Thanks, very informative.

If I understand correctly elevation reported by a GPS unit is often "bouncing around" which means the unit is going to record more "ups and downs" than reality and consequentially report excess elevation gained.

I've created an account at Runalyze.com and I'll spend some time playing with that and working through some of the finer points of your explanation and the elevation models.
