Canton,Potsdam,Massena Hotels/Food
Any thoughts on hotels in Canton,Potsdam or Massena?
I've googled but would appreciate any local or personal knowledge. We just need a clean quiet place to sleep and someplace to eat dinner and breakfast.

A friend of mine (relatively new to the area) who lives up that way offers the following information:
I think the nicest hotel in Potsdam is The Clarkson Inn. No elevator, FYI. I don't know any in Massena. Past that, I would try B and Bs, like Ostranders in Canton or ZipLid in Colton. I have not stayed in either of these, but I have heard positive things and know the owners loosely--the way you know everyone in a small town (ZipLid because they are my neighbors and Ostranders because it is also a shop specializing in sheep stuff). Eating: Maxfields in Potsdam--a little pricey for dinner, but probably the best food in Potsdam The Blackbird Cafe in Canton--nice lunch fare--paninis and such--great atmosphere--also serve during dinner hours For breakfast, I think the best place is The Village Diner in Potsdam. It is an incredibly cheap greasy spoon that only serves breakfast and lunch. A true North Country experience. Sergi's--family restaurant in Potsdam serving Italian food--the only place open after 9PM Dick |

The Quality Inn in Massena is decent. It also has a good restaurant/bar. Violi's restaurant is a very nice place. Sabad's Restaurant in Norfolk (betwen Potsdam and Massena) is excellent.

Good to see both Violis and Sabads are still going. When I lived in Massena in the mid to late 80's these were both godd places to eat dinner.

I also need to recommend McCarthy's restaurant in Canton. Very good homestyle food at a fair price.

It's good to know Sergi's is open too but if we are going to be in the car most of the day Maxfields sounds better to me ![]() |

chairrock,
Don't know when you plan to be in the area; however, if you want lodging at a time of local colleges' graduations, parents' weekends, etc. as well as at home hockey games for St. Lawrence and/or Clarkson - book your lodging EARLY! Additional places to eat in the Potsdam/Massena area: Potsdam: First Crush Wine Bar (light fare, good desserts and coffee - the professional/college crowd eats here), The Bagerly (a favorite of ours for breakfast and lunch), La Casbah (great Middle Eastern food), A-1 Oriental Kitchen (great Chinese take-out/funky-eat in), Eben's Hearth (tasty North Country food at a good price), 1844 House (early bird special is a bargin!), Mama Lucia's (Italian fare), and Angelo's (well prepared seafood and pasta). Norfork: Hotel Grande (Tex-Mex, one of our favorites for dinner). Massena: Guy's Restaurant (North Country breakfasts and lunches - a classic). Mike

Ebens Harth in Potsdam across from CU is a great place for meals. It is cheap, good, and has or had a decent bar when I was a student up there.

Thanks all for all the suggestions
We made reservations for the Quality Inn in Massena. Got a decent deal with the AAA card and we have stayed in other Quality Inns, nothing fancy but fine. Massena works with our travel plans to Canada. We like to stay in Hampton Inns when we have the choice, all pretty new and nice. I'll let you all know how we make out in a couple of weeks. Thanks again.

And certainly better than the "R" used to be(bars had to serve food at that time. There was one cheese sandwich that was the food. It was oft recycled). Anyone from that era in Canton? |
