The comments in the Free Press post are precious. Last summer, my 10 year old daughter and I had a nose to nose with a bear on the Pine Orchard trail 100 yds off of the Pumpkin Hollow Rd. parking area. We didn't hear it coming through the woods and saw a black blur about 30 yds away moving toward us at that fast walk that bears always seem to do. Unlike the guy texting in yellowcanoe's post, I saw the bear and managed to scare it away by clapping my hands, raising them over my head and yelling in my best "ticked off dad protecting his spawn" voice. It worked, and the bear did an about face and ran back down the trail. Deciding not to tempt fate, we cut the hike short and went back to the cabin for ice cream.
