Walnut Ridge, LGWF, 11 Sep, 2017

Today's "Lunch on a Ledge" hike brought Tredhed and I to a relatively new accession to the Lake George Wild Forest. Intrigued by the discussions in this Forum post from several years ago,

http://www.adkforum.com/showthread.p...ight=pole+hill

We decided to head up to Walnut Ridge via Padanarum Rd. with stops at the Lake George Land Conservancy Godwin Preserve overlook (http://www.lglc.org/preserves/godwin-preserve/) and Pole Hill Pond.

Arriving at the Padanarum Rd. trailhead, we quickly parked the Tredhed-mobile and headed up the LGLC trail.

It was a short uphill walk on the red disked trail to the junction with the yellow disked overlook trail.

Within twenty minutes of leaving the parking area, we came to the Godwin Preserve overlook. The small ledges provided a great view of High Nopit across the valley.

After checking out the scenery for a few minutes, we backtracked to the red trail and continued to Pole Hill Pond. The trail was mostly on old logging roads and very easy to follow. Soon, we crossed over onto forest preserve property and approached a small campsite on the shores of Pole Hill Pond.

We explored the area a little and discovered that this is an absolutely beautiful pond.

We followed the blue disked hiking trail around the north and east end of the pond to find more good views.

After soaking in the scenery of Pole Hill Pond, we headed back up the trail to the junction with the Walnut Ridge trail. This trail cut a short but reasonably steep path up the hill.

Soon enough, views started to appear as the trail reached the summit of the ridge.

We stopped to have a snack at one of the vistas. The view down Northwest Bay was spectacular.

We met another hiker at the top and had a nice chat about the awesome Lake George Land Conservancy properties that are open to hiking. Our new friend soon departed on the loop back down to Rt. 9N and we explored the nooks and crannies of Walnut Ridge a little more.

Soon enough, it was time to take one last look across the Tongue Mt. range at Sleeping Beauty and Erebus Mt.

The walk down was pretty straight forward and we were soon back at the parking area. We spent about four hours in the woods today on a beautiful late summer day. It sure was a heck of alot better than what Tredhed and I were doing sixteen years ago today. Never forget !!

Changing Colors on Walnut Ridge

TM didn't have room on his trip report to post my favorite photo of our hike to Pole Hill Pond and Walnut Ridge. Autumn is on its way!

It's a pretty area. LGLC did a great job protecting these parcels. The woods however, are kind of skinny as evidence by all the stumps and old logging roads. However, the views from the ledges are nice and the walk from Padanarum Rd. was pretty easy. The guy we met on top of the ridge said it was over 800' vertical from Rt. 9N with several ups and downs. Still, not too bad for such a pretty place.
