Whitehouse Cleanup

I camped overnight in the field at Whitehouse this past weekend. it was great with no people in there this early in the season.

The place is a mess however, litter and remnants from campers all over the place. Why people who car camp can not pack their stuff out remains a mystery to me. or as my friend Doug says, "I've seen quite a few yards". I guess he's right.

To get to the point. i would like to organize a clean up crew. The problem is that we will probably need an ATV to get all the trash from Whitehouse out to where the off season parking is, about two miles.

So, if there is anyone with an ATV, and we can get some people who want to help, then maybe we could do a weekend trek in (1.78 miles) and camp overnight and get a hike in as well.

Anyone up for it? (especially someone who can bring an ATV.) I'll get some plastic trash bags if we get a crew and a date, unless someone has access to freebies.

Hawk ...

I can help on the weekend of the 22-23 (either day, or both if need be) ... no access to an ATV though.

I'll bring trash bags too.

Sounds like a good excuse for a spring BBQ ...

I'll be around this Sunday afternoon, if you guy are around with some bags my friend and I would love to help out. BTW. Hawk, is the over use from car camping one of the reasons they are keeping the off season gate closed for the summer?

To my knowledge, the road is not going to be blocked for the summer. it usually is blocked from dec 1- May 1, although it's often june before the town opens it up. It all depends on the wetness and available time.

the town maintains the road, the state doesn't.

I dobn't think I'll be going in this particular weekend. Got to line up the ATV to haul the trash out, and for the next couple of weeks I may have something else that I have to attend to.

Whitehouse Cleanup Date change - Week Earlier

I have talked with Clay, the Road and highways supervisor for Wells.

If we go in and clean up and leave the plastic bags and trash at a designated spot, they will pick it up when they open the road.

So, here is my plan.

Hike into Whitehouse on saturday May 13th and set up camp in the field. (Room for plenty of tents). Spend saturday cleaning up the place and then camp and go see the stars from the Whitehouse Bridge on Saturday night.

On Sunday, hike to Hamilton lake Strweam on the NPT and between the bridge and the Leanto, Cut up and clear the blowdown that has the trail blocked. ave lunch at the lean to, return to Whitehouse and break camp and hike out. (I may stay over another night if the weather is good.

How about some volunteers. We can have a great weekend, it's a beautiful place which we will pretty much have to ourselves.

I figure the actual cleanup should only take about 3-4 hours, giving us plenty of time to get some fun in.

So, May 13, . Meet at the trailhead (well, where the road is closed) at about 9am. a little under two miles to hike in.

Just a quick update on this.

i changed the date to a week earlier (see above).

Doug will be in and hopefully it's a better day to get some volunteers.

Hey Hawk, where is the field by whitehouse. I've never seen a field up there maybe, it's cause I've always stayed on the trail?

Just before you get to the two campsites on the left in the tall pines at Whitehouse, the dirt road goes down to a field by the river. there is one campsite to the right, under a stand of trees and a couple of fire rings in the field itself.

There are also a couple of other cleraings on the right of the road. One with the chimney from an old guide shack and one more to the west of that.
