antler question

I recently found a six point buck on my property that had died earlier this season, before its antlers were shed. I do not know if it had succumbed to a hunter or whatever else the cause may have been, but it has been heavily preyed upon. At this point, there doesn't seem to be a scrap of flesh remaining. I would like to "harvest" its antlers for display.

My question is this- will the antlers separate from the skull on their own eventually? I don't want to saw them off- I want the "knobs" at their base to remain intact. Any ideas?

Anyone know if I'd be in violation of any game laws if I were to do this?

Thanks
Bob

I think the antlers will remain attached. As far as what was the demise of this deer, you can break open a leg bone and check the marrow. If it is translucent like jello, then it died of malnutrition. But with the antlers still attached, my guess , hunter wound or predation.

I have a deer skull that I found afield +25 years ago. It's bleached white with a nice 8 point rack which shows no signs of detaching.

From what little I know about deer; the antlers fall off due to a chemical (hormone?) that the brain turns off (or on?). If this doesn't happen, the antlers don't fall off the skull.

try to take the whole skull and boil it down to make an awesome European mount. but the mice will eat the horns before they fall off so best to cut the skull cap with them or take the whole skull.
