Duck Hole news

DEC told me today that they do not plan to rebuild the dam at Duck Hole.

You can find more details here.

Haha, I predict a bunch of people clicking on this thread, hopeful for news that the dam will be repaired (because the title is so ambiguous), only to get their hopes crushed when they read the post!

Actually, I'm fine with that decision.
I just need to get back there before it all turns into a meadow...for me there's something too cool about witnessing (and knowing that I am) geologic change.

On a serious note though does anybody have the same arial shot of the duck hole before the dam let loose, that maybe they could post?

Adkeditor (Adirondack Explorer editor) posted this DEC aerial shot of Duck Hole in the process of draining:
http://adirondackexplorer.org/out-ta...hole-draining/

Tall Tom's NPT site has more:
http://www.nptrail.org/NPT_Projects.html

I think I've seen a "before and after" photo somewhere on the forum, but I can't remember if it was an aerial photo or not.

Yes, I remember the before and after shots just after Irene but I do not believe it was aerial. But I must say the empty "hole" from the air was quite impressive.

News?
Please correct me if I am mistaken, but wasn't that the DEC's plan all along...not to rebuild/repair the dam?

Everyone should carry a large stone to drop in the creek at the site of the old dam. Before you know it we will have a new dam! Or a good set of stepping stones to cross on.

Bob, on the face of things it would appear that the same logic being applied to Duck Hole would also apply to Marcy Dam.

According to an Adirondack Explorer article (posted earlier), the dam will either be reconstructed or a new one will be rebuilt. Details:

That article refers to the bridge over the dam, not the dam itself.

"The state will either reconstruct the bridge at Marcy Dam or build a new one nearby"

Oops, thanks for the correction! I didn't read it carefully enough!

Duck Hole was a beautiful place as a man made pond and will be a beautiful place as a man made meadow. The new growth will be very beneficial to wildlife and the start to a new ecosystem. I still prefer the Adirondacks in its natural untouched phase.

I had asked DEC several times about their plans for Duck Hole. This was the first time they told me they did not anticipate repairing the dam.
