Ok, I was just caught a bit by surprise when reading this adirondack forum to find the link to the Palace here. I live so close to this I can walk to it, and actually have several times.
Yeah, I know, it's off-topic. But I did want to say since they have remodeled it (It's Beautiful!) the owners have done a lot to bring interesting 'presentations', shows, and other live venues there.
I'm curious if anyone here remembers Francis, the really old lady that used to run it?

That depends on the topic and whether or not a moderator is interested in it. Just roll the dice.

That maybe true, but you coming from Clay, I bet you know exactly where The Palace is. Nice to see another Syracuse-area poster here. Pleased to make your acquaintance Dustin.

Tolerance for off topic drift = T

Seriousness of subject = S

Moderator's felxibility = mF

T = S(mF)x

where x is extremely variable.

That said, I believe that a lengthy and fairly serious discussion such as this one, regarding important issues such as energy supply and the environment should remain tightly focused and on-topic. If only out of respect for the participants.

I definitely understand and agree.

And I'm sorry for the topic-drift. It just caught me by surprise.

Oh to know all the answers...no comments on the environmental problems of fracking...

Thanks for the link. That article is one of the most one-sided pieces of writing I've read in quite a while, with absolutely no mention of the damage that hydro-fracking can do and has already done in Pennsylvania or any of the other locations cited. The writer mentioned China, India, and Brazil, but failed to mention the tremendous pollution that the 19th century-style coal-burning manufacturing in China generates, or the deforestation in Brazil that threatens the World's oxygen producing rain forest. Most people would like to be millionaires, but in this case, there would be a very high cost to residents of the future who will also want to have clean water. fresh air, and places for recreation.

The article does present "one of the sides" that goes unmentioned, or at least undefended, in most of the other links and posts found in this thread. For that we should be grateful. The issues are complex, the solutions not as obvious as any of us would like them to be. When "one side" is not balanced by the other sides we do our discussion a disservice.

It's not just here

Here's a similar but different story related to refining (not gas mining). I just read this tonight - it wasn't supposed to happen in Fairbanks, Alaska, either:

so what we've got are corporations with millions or billions of dollars on the line saying "trust us, it's really quite safe, and we'll regulate ourselves, and we promise we can manage any worst case scenarios".

Where have we heard that before?

The Royal Shell purchase of East Resources has me concerned. East owned alot of gas leases. Suddenly, you go from a small organization that until last year had a single shareholder to a multi billion dollar corporation owning all these leases. Theres alot more opportunity for bullying the small guys and influencing the big guys (politicians). Oil companies have not exactly earned our trust.
