My first venture online was with a 32 baud modem. There was no compression and no error checking. Ward Christiansen hadn't invented Xmodem protocol yet (he did so in 1977).
There was no ms-dos, we used CPM and everything was text based.
In order to transfer an Executable file (.exe or .bin) it had to be converted into ascii and then converted back on the receiving end.
It took a lot more intelligence and a lot more work then.
Hell, might be a few things I could teach the kids!!
