Yes, that, along with dragging him out of a swamp.

Congratulations on a nice deer. Any story on how you got him?

I have a bit of a story I guess.

Early in the previous week, I was at a location where I don't frequent too often. I 've seen many Does at this spot and never had I seen any bucks mingling with them. But with the weather being what it is I decided to stay in some cover and decided to go to this spot.

There are fields that stretch 400 yards plus with hardwood ridges and lowland swamp with a stream nearby. Where I position myself is in a Hemlock forest looking into what I just described. I put my chair down and before I had a chance to sit, noticed a group of Does, thinking not a big deal for the simple fact I saw many here before. So, I decided to range a couple, 273 yards. Nice, I thought. But then noticed a flash of a tine in the tall field grass. Zoomed the rifle scope into 9 power and counted some points, looked like a 6 point from the distance, couldn't get an accurate count. But continued to watch and scan.

Within a 1/2 hour of watching and ranging his distance of 300 yards plus he finally broke and went for some cover, into the hardwood. I am certain a coyote spooked the deer. Those darn things are everywhere there. Couldn't shoot into the field if I wanted to, not posted where I was but not taking any chances. I'll wait. The swamp I spoke of is north of my position or west of Hemlock forest.

Today I decided to take a walk mid-afternoon and sit in my spot and watch the field. Nothing happening, no does or him. Starts to rain mist and things are looking poorly with no hope of salvation. Thinking maybe I will walk the edge and no sooner than I turn my head, there he is staring at me. 70 yards. Maybe less, but not more. I raised the rifle and peered into the scope thinking he is going to bolt, but I am in a camo poncho looking like I might be a big tree to him. The poncho covers my whole body nearly, concealing my form.

Ok, I can shoot but here I am waiting and watching. Crosshair on his chest. What the hell I am I doing I think, "shoot". I don't shoot, but wait, he turns 180 degrees and I think it's time. I squeezed and saw nothing.

So, from the edge, he darts into the swamp, thick alders and much water and tall grass. I will have a hard time finding blood. Needle in a haystack type of thing. I crawl through the alders and muck to where he darted in and look for a sign, any kind of sign. Thinking, even if I did hit him I'll never find him in there. But my luck must be good, blood all over the place! Great, I followed for 15 maybe twenty yards of blood and there he was, piled up and expired!

I was using a 270 Winchester with the new Sierra Game Changer 140-grain bullet. Handloads and H4831sc powder propelling the bullet. I hit him in the rear hind quarter and sliced his femoral artery, he expired quickly. Maybe the processor will recover the bullet for show and tell. This way I can brag up the efficiency of Sierra's new bullet.

Well, that's my story as close to my memory as can tell.

Glad to have another buck to the list.

Great job "Two Beavers". Glad the .270 did it's job for you. You earned him by persevering in the rain. Thanks for sharing.

Congratulations Ed. Thanks for writing that up.
I like the chain collar it has in that one photo.

Hopefully, things will be picking up over the next couple of weeks...

Yes, things are slow (I'm seeing more moose sign than deer, even on some small ridges) and no videos since all I would have to do is change the year. I'll put one together when the season is over unless something changes before then.

Will be heading back in a week or so for a few days.
