A few years ago I got within 150 feet of a sow and three cubs before I saw it. She held her ground but gave me a chance to retreat, which I did by slowly backing up and not looking the sow directly in the eyes. Black bear attacks on humans are quite rare. I have had them rush me but they stopped after much shouting and waving of arms. In fact they ran away. So did I.
