Garbage/bear bait left behind by slobs.

Moderator's note: I split this topic off from the Lil Sammy bear cannister failure thread.

Last time I was camping in the ADKs, just last weekend, someone had emptied a bowl of dogfood into the firepit. Thanks for the bear bait, folks. Bears are not the problem. People are the problem.

This weekend I cleaned up the site I stayed at in MRP - full bag of garbage - bits of steak, sausage, half burnt food boxes, beer cans, cigarettes, some sort of cake like thing, eggs, wipes, paper towels - total dump.

I hate that you had to clean up some dirtbag's mess, but thanks for doing it.

What's the difference between ignorance & apathy?

Don't know and don't care!

In addition to their insult to the land and fellow campers, slob campers of course train bears to be "nuisance" creatures that might need to be "euthanized."

My son lives in Jackson, WY, and witnesses all kinds of stupidity around bears, usually involving food or cameras or both, all off it by tourists. For example, he once saw a group of people taking photos of a grizzly. She was about 30 feet from the roadside where they were gathered. She was at the base of a tree, clearly stressed, her back hunched, saliva running from her mouth. Her cub was up in the tree. He stopped his truck and tried to convince people to get back into their vehicles. Nope. One lady said, "It's okay, I got bear spray."

He called a ranger, who came right out and made the people get into their vehicles. In the process, the ranger needed to get out of his own truck, exposing himself to danger.

I asked my son why he doesn't let such tourists learn the hard way, a stupid question for more than one reason. He answered, "Because then the bear will be shot."
