Blue Ridge - West Peak May 28

I ascended the west peak of the Blue Ridge (Blue Ridge Wilderness) on May 28. Starting at the Northville Placid Trail crossing of Brown's Brook, ascend the old Dishrag Pond truck trail. This is generally easy to follow but is grown in and has blowdown in spots. The one place to potentially lose the trail is the "dead" beaver pond about a mile in from the NPT. Hug the left side of the clearing and the trail will reappear in a hundred yards or so.

The infamous old car is literally at the end of the trail. This is about 200 yards from the brook crossing below Dishrag Pond, pretty much right on the township line. Your bushwhack starts here. Bear NW and find a place to cross the brook. That's not trivial as there are some marshy sections. Continue to bear NW and start to climb. The climb is at first gradual, then steepens. The bottom part is reasonably open woods. I encountered some blowdown, but not ridiculous, near and on the ridge. I was on the top in the clouds, but I'd bet any views in good weather are spotty at best.

I reversed course and got a partial view of Dishrag Pond descending. Never encountered ledge but there are some steep sections. The fact that the car (and beginning of the trail) are right on the town line is very handy for your GPS, or just drop a marker there for your return.

All in all an interesting adventure in some very deep woods. I saw quite a bit of moose sign along the truck trail but no moose. #57 on the AHH list for me.
