What makes the Adirondacks special?

Reading bios and many posts, it sounds like a lot of people here have traveled to and spent time outdoors in many other amazing areas (Rockies, Alaska, etc). Although these places may initially seem more impressive (higher peaks, more remoteness) the Adirondacks have their own flavor and history that brings people back.

What is it that makes the Adirondacks special?
