  • Private Clubs in the ADKs

Reading this thread (http://www.adkforum.com/showthread.php?p=136491) got me to wondering about the other private clubs in the ADKs. I certainly have read about the historical ones like The Lake Placid Club and am aware of the The Ausable Club http://www.ausableclub.org/ (though no idea how one becomes a member).

So, does anyone know of any others and if so what is the deal? Hunting clubs? Old Money clubs? Can any be joined, etc? Stories please!

I don't know much about it, but ROBINWOOD PARK has a website and its members drive motor boats on Bog Lake.

The Lake Placid club in the 50's ,as I read in a book with a similar title, consisted of the elite and was ,as you said, private. My Uncle has old photos of people boating and dining ,all with proper attire.Seems it would fit Roosevelt and family.
Try ''looking up ''hunting or hiking private clubs in the ADK's'' at local library. Looncry

Just general information, I am a curious cat. What's setup like within the camp. Any cabins? What happens during non-hunting season?

You need to have connections. And by connections, I mean really good connections. It's my understanding that there have been US Presidents that have been rejected by the Ausble Club.

The buildings at the Upper Works trailhead were all once part of the Tahawus Club.

As I recall, Barbara McMartin's book The Privately Owned Adirondacks has quite a bit of historical information on a number of clubs and preserves.

I was hiking along the West River trail once and I ran into a group of like 10 Asian people. I assumed that they were either members or a guest of a member. They all had very expensive clothes on and not hiking clothes. A few were even just wearing loafer like shoes. They were amazed by me. A couple of the women pointed at me and I could here them say "oooh" like I was a big attraction or something. I wasn't too impressed with them though. The encounter had me chuckling all the way back to my car.

Well, if I told you I'd prolly have to kill you...remember, what happens at hunting camp stays at hunting camp

                      Sorry...just couldn't resist that.

Seriously, though, I cannot speak for the hoity toity camps referred to elsewhere on this thread, but if you want to know about a 'regular' hunting camp there is no big secret with mine as with most, I'm sure. There are others on the forum who belong to hunting camps also and I'm sure they would fill you in, too.

I belong to the Blue Mountain Lake Club (www.bluemtlakeclub.com) and we average about 100 members. In addition to hunting, my club offers fishing, hiking, XC skiing, camping, ATV/snowmobile trails, and various club functions during the year. We just hosted an ATV rally and there will be another in the spring. Some club functions are open to non-members since (if I may boldly place my advertisement here) we are actively looking for new membership. Some members (myself included, see my av) have cabins which we use year round.
You do not need to be wealthy or well connected to join. Our members are just good old boys and their families.

I hope this helps to clarify the mystique about those gated roads you see all over the place. Simply put, the property is secured and patrolled for protection.

                      Hope this helps...

All that definitely does, thanks for the insight. And Fisher, thanks for the tip, I will definitely check that one out.

Actually I would. PM me if you don't mind. This could be fun. The Blue Mt area is a reasonable drive for me. Thanks Rickie

I also belong to a club, The Minerva Fish and Game Club. The club has existed for over 60 years. The actual lease is near Long Lake on the Newcomb Rd. We have over 5000 acres that is actively logged .There are about 20 camps on the lease with around hundred members. Each camp is owned either by a small group or an individual. You can either belong to a camp, or just be a member at large. We too are looking for members and a couple of camps are for sale. The camps are usually small, being less than 500 Square feet. All are off the grid, with varied amenities. PM if interested in joining or in buying a camp.
