Florida FreeStyle Symposium
This is it. The BIG announcement. The Official announcement. The straight from the horses mouth announcement. OK enough of that.
The New Florida Freestyle Symposium is officially announced. It will take place March 19,20 and 21 outside of Jacksonville Florida. Information and Registration materials are being posted as I write this. They are available on the FreeStyle website, www.freestylecanoeing.com. I will re-post this information on other paddling message boards. Please feel free to publicize the event or re-post this information on any club bulletin boards or any place else you think interested people might read it. Florida Freestyle Symposium Update
Florida Freestyle Update
I’d like to thank those who have sent their registrations in early. The registrations received have brought us almost to the break even point on fixed expenses. From the registrations and other communications received, it is clear that we’ll have plenty of instructors. Mark Molina has offered to do a “Heeling and Kneeling Class”. Although this is not shown on the registration form, you may write in the request. The fee will be the same as for other class offerings. We’re still waiting for confirmation on the CPR Class. Please keep in mind that space in the bunk houses is limited. If you plan on utilizing those accommodations, registering early will ensure your space. I’ve already received several suggestions for day trips to be held after the symposium. One person has suggested he might lead a trip in the Sparkleberry swamp in South Carolina for those heading back north. If anyone has a specific trip request in the Jacksonville area or would like to lead an after event day trip in an area that they know, please send me an email. In a future update I’ll list the offerings. With the first signs of real winter just beginning to reach those of us in the north , it’s a good time to start thinking about warm, sunny Florida. Best holiday wishes to all. Marc |

Me too..now to think of boat moving.. and keeping the trailer free!
Perhaps those that wish to go from the North can boatpool. I will try and remember to ask on reg form if we can stay there Thursday night to be ready for CPR..is it the combined CPR First Aid Class? Florida is nice..all this is because of something called Adirondack FreeStyle Symposium...the daddy event of all of it. We just cant get enough of making our boats behave. Its subtle.. and much like equine dressage..now why did the boat do that? |

One can PROBABLY stay Thursday night
but I can't confirm that at this time. Best to be prepared with a backup plan, just in case.
As for CPR/First Aid, I'm still waiting for confirmation and details from the instructor. I'll email her, but you may want to inquire of her directly, since she's in your neighborhood. Marc |

We now have a publicity poster and logo for the Florida Freestyle Symposium. Inspiration and “artistry” are from me. Technical assistance and layout are from Ray Halt. The paddling gator will be featured on the FFS T shirts.
I would appreciate it if those of you who can would make copies of the poster and place them in local paddling shops, club bulletin boards etc. If you’re able to have the poster included in a club brochure that would be appreciated as well. Since I can't place the poster directly on this message board, please email me directly for a copy. I will forward the file to anyone who requests it. Registrations are continuing to come in and it would appear that we’ll have a good turnout. Marc Ornstein dogpaddle@frontiernet.net |

A bit off topic but
The latest issue of the CROSSPOST (the newsletter of the freestyle committee) is fresh off the press and is now available online at http://www.freestylecanoeing.com/Cro...0Fall09PDF.pdf . It may also be downloaded from the freestyle website (www.freestylecanoeing.com .
The CROSSPOST contains several articles about past and upcoming symposia as well as instructional information that should be of interest to any serious canoeist. Marc Ornstein |

Fine Site!
Marc and I just finished touring the site for the Florida FS event. Two great ponds, neat dorms and mess hall and camping or motels close for those otherwise inclined. And, great seafood just ten miles East down the road. When you throw an oyster shell out the back door of the Crab Trap on Amelia Island, it splashes into salt water!

Charlie beat me to the punch but here's a few details
I've just returned from Florida where among other things I made a visit to the FS site in Yulee. I managed to tie up a few loose ends.
It looks like we can comfortably fit seven classes simultaneously on the two college ponds. I'm working on permission to use an additional pond (if we need it) in front of the County Courthouse, a couple of hundred yards away. There is also a slow moving, tidal river with good access, just down the road. Several people have inquired about using self contained campers while on site. I'm happy to report that such use is approved. Pay the standard tent camping fee shown on the registration. The CPR class is still up in the air. I should have a final decision on that within the next week. The instructor is still attempting to work through some American Red Cross bureaucracy. Registrations are coming in nicely. It's looking like will have a good turnout. Marc Ornstein |

Things are progressing well for the upcoming Florida Freestyle Symposium.
We've finally tied up all the loose ends with regard to the combined CPR first aid class. Jackie Peppe will be teaching the class. She had to jump through a bunch of bureaucratic hoops with the red cross since she resides in Maine and will be teaching in Florida, but it appears to be a done deal. Anyone who is registered for the CPR/First Aid class will need to be available all day Friday. Tentatively, the class will begin at 8:00 AM. There will be no food service on site until dinner on Friday, so plan on breakfast before you arrive. Either bring a box lunch or plan on going out for a quick bite. Fast food is available nearby. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call or email me. Marc Ornstein |

Fast Food Question
Can we get Gator Burgers or Pulled Gator close? The last time I had gator it was a lot like un-brined free range chicken - tastier but tougher than the standard supermarket variety.

http://crabtrapamelia.com/page3.html. Can't find anything but tail however.
However this is an Adirondack forum and I expect, Charlie, for you to post your appetizer entree for lightly breaded deep fried leech with an aioli sauce. |

Simple recipe
I use the same recipe for Leaches that I use for Banana Slugs when in the NorthWest/
First marinate the little dears in beer for ~ an hour. Then build the aioli; add 3 lg cloves pressed garlic per cup of Heilman's olive oil mayo, then add enough Tabasco Chipotle sauce to please, stir, and let sit. At the 60 minute mark start a 1/8 " of olive oil heating in a large saute' pan and drop in a quarter stick of butter Dry the leaches, then dip the little guys in a egg wash, roll in Panko Bread Crumbs, and plop into the oil, turning with tongs after a minute. [Slugs take 2 min/ side.] Remove to folded paper towels to drain excess oil. While they can be served on bruschetta, most prefer to just dip the flesh into the aioli and pop right into the mouth. Takes 8-10 leeches per as an appetizer, maybe 5-6 with bruschetta, and a good 20 or more per person as a main course. |

I'm glad the college is providing the food at FFS
Charlie,
I've got you down for two teaching sessions (canoeing that is). The college has a culinary arts program and perhaps you'd like to apply for a position there. I'll keep a copy of this thread just in case you need it for your resume. Just a reminder to any procrastinators out there. Time is running out to send in your registrations. March 31st is the deadline. As of now, it looks like attendance will be approximately 35, including instructors. Marc Ornstein P.S. I promise all attendees, Charlie is not providing food service at the symposium. |

Venue? It cant be the DEC office or the State Police Barracks. The prison?
BTW if Charlie did provide meal service it would undoubtedly be a cut above "simple college fare". |
