I've been on a road in the mountains in Taiwan that looks a lot like
#10 Guolian Tunnel road, China.
The scary part was looking across the valley and seeing several hundred feet of old road clinging to a cliff -- the rest fell off the mountain in an earthquake.

I've been on some pretty sketchy road while doing relief work in Honduras. Single lane dirt road with no railing and a 200 foot drop to some of the best white water rafting I've ever seen (the Rio Cangrejal, and yes there is at least one rafting company, owned by a couple of crazy Germans).

The joke was that it was safer to ride in the back of the pickup, so if the truck goes over the edge, at least you can bail out.

but still nothing like the roads on that list. yikes.

I thought for sure some of the scary roads in the Italian, Swiss and French Alps would be featured- Especiall the main road out of switzerland into Chamoniox.
However - I almost blew it when I saw #14 in norway. That sent Terror and tremors down my spine. that road looks so terryfiing!!!!

Yeah those roads are scary, but how many of them have crazy French Canadian Logging Truck Drivers racing up & down them at 80+ during heavy snowstorms?

That sounds like you're speaking from experience.

I rode that Taroko Gorge road back in 1989 when I toured Taiwan by bike.

It was very remote and undeveloped at the time. One of the longest and most interesting downhills I've ever had. The scariest part was going through some really long unlit tunnels.

Just drive on the Northway during any snow storm,

Often the snow will fall so hard and there 's so few cars and they a'int plowing the roads until 9 AM, that the snow will quick cover the road to the point you can't even see where the lanes are (the only way you know is when you drift out and hear the rumble strips) and you end up plowing through several inches of snow on the road.

In a car or even SUV you have to slow down to 50 or even 40 or in real bad conditions even lower.

But while you in your car or truck have to slow down, even a foot or more of snow isn't going to stop a loaded 18 wheeler and they know that no trooper is going to get out of their nice warm & cozy patrol car just to give them a ticket so they really ratchet up the speed, like 80+ mph.

This is especially true in Clinton County where the Northway is more flat & straight and they can race to and from the border.

There's no more nerve racking feeling, when you going 30 - 40 mph and are fighting just to stay on the road and there's a big 18 wheeler bearing down on you at 80+ and when they pass you they bury you in snow as they zoom by.

Go through that a few times and many of those roads in your link will seem like a piece of cake.
