Boreas Ponds: 20,000+ new acres to explore
According to the press release it is designated as 11,412 acres of wilderness, 9,118 acres of wild forest, 11 acres of primitive and 2 acres of state administrative land. On the map it look like there's an access road going right up to the southern end of the ponds. Has anyone been out? I'm looking forward to your trip reports and to writing my own!

This forum is loaded with Boreas Ponds threads, including about Tuesday night's meeting on the UMP in Newcomb. You can't drive to the ponds right now and future access will be determined after the UMP process.

The Boreas Ponds acquisition and classification adds 680 acres of motor-free paddling water to the ADK. Compare to Saint Regis Pond at 400 acres. The northern half of the lands, just over half, and including the ponds, is classified as Wilderness. Most of the rest is Wild Forest. Motors and bicycles are banned in the former and permitted in the latter.
A large parking area on Gulf Brook Road is at N43 58.869 W73 54.053. From there you can hike, dolly or portage on a good flat road out to the ponds. There're no camp sites yet so camping is at a distance from the water. A seven-mile dirt road that ends near the ponds is classified as Wild Forest and a small parking area for a few cars is planned there, as well as a main parking area farther from the ponds, TBD. Leased camps in the area will be removed in October 2018. Last edited by Neil; 04-05-2018 at 08:51 AM.. Reason: posts ref'd removed by admin |
