Gun hunters must go through the hunter safety course and should be fully aware of the "rules" of gun safety. As long as there are dual use forests there will be an element of danger. I hunt in the deep forests sometimes not seeing another hunter or hiker during my entire trip. It doesn't mean that somebody isn't there. It only means that the odds are less.
I've seen hikers on the NPT that appeared to go out of there way to wear the "wrong" colored clothing. I think that they are completely obliviuos to the fact that it may be hunting season. I try to avoid trails as much as possible using them only for access.
There should be a form of safety training for hikers. Not only concerning hunting season but trail safety in general.
I ran across a couple who hiked in on a day trip. I muself was coming out after a three day hunt. It became dark as they mis-timed thier hike out. They had no flashlight of emergecy equipment. The lady was crying and the guy had no clue. Those folks, for sure, were happy to see this hunter with rifle and pack as I led them out to thier car in Benson.

Listen folks, the simple and smart thing to do is when somebody shoots at you, shoot back.
