Bird id

Saw these birds near Clockmill Corners on the Powley-Piseco Rd. Ruffed grouse habitat; birds are size of bobwhite quail. Note the one with well-camoflauged "natural" plumage. I've e-mailed DEC; awaiting their response. What do you think they are?

I should add that they were definitely a Gallinaceous species (quail/partridge/grouse), not a songbird. Also, the habitat was extensive forest - no open country or human residences for miles.
