Sand Lake

Hello All, Can anyone verify that I will be able to get to Sand Lake mid May. I am going in via the high falls loop and am concerned about the spring flooding being an issue. Anyone ever gone in May? My hiking partner seem really concerned that flooding may be an issue and the trail will not allow us to venture into Five Ponds.
Thanks

Flooding is a potential issue on the High Falls Loop 365 days a year, thanks to a robust beaver population; but the solution is to bring some alternate footwear and step through whatever you encounter, if anything. None of it is trip-ending.

The one thing you might want to check with the local ranger is the status of the footbridge over the Oswegatchie at Round Hill Rapids. The suspension bridge in Wanakena was wiped out by ice earlier this winter, but I have not heard anything about the Round Hill bridge, which is on the trail to Five Ponds. Fording the Oswegatchie would not be fun.

I'm planning a four day trip going from Inlet to the Five Ponds Trail bridge via canoe, then stowaying away the boat for a hike in to the Sand Lake leanto. Does anyone have an update on conditions out that way?

Thanks

Hey all this seems as good a place as any to ask...

I have been down to wolf pond from highfalls loop, but we were wondering if you can come from the other way into sand lake and then wolf pond? Wolf from Wanakena is about 12 miles i think, thats a little more than we would like to do and we only have 2-3 nights. On the maps i can see what look to be some roads down that way near sand lake and such but i suspect they might just be old logging roads? any one know if there is an access point down that way you can get to so you can hike up into sand lake then into wolf pond?

If the weather has been dry and it is after mud season, you can drive a 2wd car all the way into the Middle Branch of the Oswegatchie, almost as far as Brindle Pond. Sand Lake is a fairly short hike from there.
