Hobo is back and planning for another thru hike. I had the bad fortune to run into him.

So did he say inappropriate things to you also?

No, but he was setting off M80's at Cedar Lakes #1 and is a general know-it-all. Plus every other word in his vocabulary starts with "F". Not that I'm a prude, but if that's the only word you know...

Oh that sucks. Did you ask him why he thought that was necessary?

This guy sounds like a real class act.
Another reason for me to steer clear of the NPT.

No, I didn't. I just realized that he is an idiot and you can't reason with people like that.

Not necessarily. I've met several great folks on the NP. If you go in spring (right after snow melt and before bugs; although wet) or late Sept./early Oct) it is a very underused trail. Summer can be busy, especially for w/e hikers. Most nights on the trail I have had to myself or the person I was with. I've only shared an LT a total of six times in all these years.

I'll PM anyone who wants a description of this guy.

I agree, the trail is generally a nice place to be. And we met nice people also.

Too bad this bad actor is allowed to be out there for this long (what is it now, 3 years?) Maybe the PM of his description should go to the State Police...or the DEC? I'm no lawyer, but certainly there is at least harassment, disturbing the peace, at least one case of menacing, not to mention a host of DEC regs.

Very true, and same here.
I retract my "steering clear" comment...I do plan to visit Cedar Lakes this fall, and I might be on a certain 2 mile stretch of the NPT this weekend.

He has a facebook page with his picture on it, so it's not like he's hiding or anything.

I agree with you, but he did not do anything illegal to me. Even the M80's would only be a violation, I think? I personally believe Woodstrider in her original post on VFTT, but it would be her word against his. There would need to be evidence that he tried to touch her and said sexual things. Was there a witness?

I don't think he's breaking any DEC regs; he keeps moving on the trail and I don't think he's catching more trout than the legal limit.

I think he's annoying, but that's not illegal.

It should be

There is a cool relation to this on Netflix right now called Valley Uprising. People used to do what he does all the time, and it used to be kind of OK. Specifically one of the points in the movie is the attitude of rangers at Yosemite to "bums" or homeless people living there.

Personally I think it would be very easy to be a homeless person (at least during the warmer months) in the park. You could do it and not even break a single rule, much like he does. I'd move around more, but NPT is a good vein to use for getting one place to another.

Eventually, much like in my first example, someone would notice you and probably drop the dime on you and try to find some reason to get you to stop doing what you are doing.

So you're advocating a law/regulation banning annoying people from the trails?

Justin - it sounds like you are ready to live that thread you linked. It can't be coincidence that you keep bringing it up.

I hear Boreas Ponds are nice this time of year
