Why wait 10, 20, or 50 years. Their chances of repopulating the Adirondacks based on the current recolonization rate of the Midwest may make it impossible for a breeding population to occur in the next century.

The NYSDEC (with Dr. John Laundre' at the helm) should take a bold calculated step to reintroduce mountain lions to the Adirondacks within the next five years and become a leader in predator study/conservation in the Northeast.

Good idea, and not just cougars, bring back the whole missing ecosystem: elk, forest bison, wolverines, lynx (do it right this time), red wolves, cougars. No reason the ADK's shouldn't be Yellowstone East, with all the attendant eco economic wildlife watching and big game hunting opportunities.

We could probably get the Army Corps of Engineers in and construct sme hot spings and pump a few geysers while we're at it. Maybe even clone a dinosaur or too. Imagine the tourist possibilities with a tyrannosaurus Rex at Marcy Dam. That would probably end the "bear problem" too.

@gulo: Bringing back the entire ecosystem would be great but very difficult to get past the general public. Start with one species at a time. It was very unfortunate that the lynx reintroduction of the 80's failed, but that should not dictate the reintroduction of any other lost species. NY should learn from their mistakes and try again. I truly feel that reintroducing mountain lions into the Adirondacks based on Dr. John Laundre's research would be a success both environmentally and economically so long as it is supported by local residents.

Noah Sudarsky's Earth Island Journal follow-up to his killed National Geographic cougar article.

Unfortunately, the "conflicts" in the title imply attacks and depredations - cougar conflicts that are on the decline - rather than the management conflicts the article exposes.
