Help ID Bird

I went camping with my uncle and cousin last week up in Newcomb. Well, on the second day I wasn't feeling great, and decided to go relieve myself in the woods. I walked a distance and found a good spot. Well, when I got there this bird bolted away quickly. It was roughly the size of a duck. It was dark bodied. Dark brown or black with a thin solid white ring around its neck and a red head. It had the bill of a duck, but I've checked lists of birds in the area, and found nothing. My uncle suggested it was a pileated woodpecker, but I am certain it is not.

Anyone have any ideas?

Here's a rough sketch of what the bird looked like.

How about a red headed woodpecker?

Another guess might be a ring necked pheasant as they have quite a bit of red around the eyes, but those would be very rare in the Newcomb area. They would also be inclined to run away as opposed to flying. I suspect it bolted away when it observed what you were doing. :-)

Possibly a hen common goldeneye. They nest in trees.

I googled "red head duck" and found that there is in fact a "Redhead Duck"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redhead_(bird)

which can be seen in this area

http://sdakotabirds.com/species/maps/redhead_map.htm

so maybe that's what it was?

I use this site quite a bit...
http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/search
It can help you ID based on size, shape, etc.
Might also have been a red-bellied woodpecker (if you mistook the bill)

Haha. I'm pretty proficient with drawing and painting, but not that great at MSPaint. If you give me a tuba, chances are I'll be able to get something out of it.

My ultimate guess would have to be a redheaded duck. The light could have been messing with my eyes that day, and this seems to be the closest thing to what I remember.
