![]() Last week some moron shot and killed a moose on Goldsmith Road in Sugarbush, NY The moose was left on the side of the road! The DEC is saying it was a 700 pound female and they have an idea who killed the moose, but cannot prove it as yet. I guess I am just venting here. I live on Goldsmith Road and have had moose in our yard several times. We have many sightings throughout the year here and often see moose prints on the road. People have to know that moose are protected in New York. Why would someone do something like this?????? OMG! I'm so angry!!!!!!!!!

I agree. Wasn't there a fatality (both moose and human) car accident near there a few years ago on Rte 3?

I don't think there's been a human fatality via a moose-vehicle collision in New York, yet. Bound to happen though.

I hope they find who did this and they get their licenses revoked and also hope they get some prison time. This is just horrible to do such a crime, then just leave it there. It was just a senseless act!

Since you can't legally shoot a moose in NY, what exactly would be a good reason?

Other stupid reasons. Because I could. I wanted too. It ate my garden. I thought I could get away with it. I thought it was a moose crossing sign. ![]() |

There are authorities to be called for most situations...rather than taking it on to one's self and then leaving the scene.

So far, nothing from DEC and they released new ECO and Forest Ranger reports today.
ADKGal: did you see the dead moose. Did you talk to DEC? If so, was it a Forest Ranger, ECO or both? Usually this kind of thing is newsy.

A few years back a moose was shot along rt 28 in Forestport. It was shot 9 times by a State Trooper with his 9mm, trying to stop the suffering after being struck by a car. The moose refused to die. The trooper finally went next door and got a neighbor with a 30-06 to dispatch it. So I will wait for the facts to come out before passing judgment.

You can't legally hunt with buckshot in NY either. And it would be a rare hunter that employs a shotgun in Northern Zone where rifles are legal.
